Andrew Smith (British Politician)
Andrew David Smith (born 1 February 1951) is a British Labour Party politician who was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Oxford East from 1987 until 2017. He served in the Cabinet as Chief Secretary to the Treasury from 1999 to 2002 and then as Secretary of State for Work and Pensions from 2002 to 2004. Smith retired from the House of Commons at the 2017 general election. Early life Smith was educated at Reading School and St John's College, Oxford, where he gained a BA and BPhil. He was the Member Relations Officer for Oxford and Swindon Co-op Society from 1979 to 1987. He became an Oxford City Councillor in 1976, leaving the council in 1987. He contested Oxford East in 1983. Andrew Whyte Smith (6 February 1849 – 18 July 1901) was a Canadian amateur golfer. He finished tied for third place in the 1895 U.S. Open played at Newport Golf Club in Rhode Island and had an identical result in the 1896 U.S. Open, held July 18, 1896, at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York. Early life Smith was born and educated in St Andrews, Scotland. He came into his own as a golfer in his early 20s, playing with contemporaries such as Young Tom Morris and Davie Strath in St Andrews Rose Golf Club competitions. In 1873 he moved to Glasgow, winning the Spring Meeting and Scratch Medal of the Glasgow Golf Club where he acted as Assistant Secretary. Andrew Smith (born 28 August 1960) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Collingwood and the Sydney Swans in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Smith, a defender, was recruited from Watsonia. He played just once in 1980, his debut year, but in 1981 was a regular fixture in the Collingwood team, making 18 appearances, including two finals. Andrew Smith (September 9, 1990 – January 12, 2016) was an American basketball player. He played in two NCAA Final Fours during his career at Butler, as well as professionally for Neptūnas. Smith grew up in the Indianapolis, Indiana, area. He attended Covenant Christian High School where he became a star basketball player. During his senior year, he led the state of Indiana in rebounding, was named All-City player of the year, and was selected as a National Christian Schools Athletic Association All-American.
