Andrée Martin
Andrée Martin (born 18 March 1949) is a Canadian former professional tennis player. Martin, a Montreal native, debuted for the Canada Federation Cup team in 1969 and over the next seven years featured in a total of 23 rubbers, registering four singles and four doubles wins. She was Canada's top ranked player in 1970, a year where she claimed the Canadian Closed Tennis Championship. In 1971 she featured in the singles main draw at Wimbledon, losing in the opening round to Betty Stöve Betty Flippina Stöve (born 24 June 1945) is a Dutch former professional tennis player. Tennis
Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court. The object of the game is to manoeuvre the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a valid return. The player who is unable to return the ball validly will not gain a point, while the opposite player will. Tennis is an Olympic sport and is played at all levels of society and at all ages. Canada Federation Cup Team
The Canada women's national tennis represents Canada in Billie Jean King Cup tennis competition since 1963. They are overseen by Tennis Canada, the governing body of tennis in Canada. Canada has reached the semifinals in 1988, and the quarterfinals on four occasions in 1964, 1967, 1987 and 2015. It has also only missed one Fed Cup since the inaugural competition in 1963. The Wimbledon Championships, commonly known simply as Wimbledon, is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and is widely regarded as the most prestigious. It has been held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London, since 1877 and is played on outdoor grass courts, with retractable roofs over the two main courts since 2019. Wimbledon is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, the others being the Australian Open, the French Open, and the US Open. Wimbledon is the only major still played on grass, the traditional tennis playing surface. Betty Stöve
Betty Flippina Stöve (born 24 June 1945) is a Dutch former professional tennis player. She is best remembered for reaching the ladies' singles final, the ladies' doubles final and the mixed doubles final during the same year at Wimbledon in 1977. She also won ten Grand Slam titles in women's doubles and mixed doubles. Career Stöve began playing tennis internationally in the mid-1960s. She made her Grand Slam debut at the 1964 Wimbledon. A virus, complicated by a malfunctioning thyroid gland, forced Stöve out of tennis for an 18-month period in the late 1960s. Despite being advised that she should never play tennis again, Stöve recovered to have her best years on the circuit. Stöve was an accomplished singles player reaching several finals on tour and attaining a singles ranking of number 5.
