Andres Langemets (born 9 March 1948 in Rapla) is an Estonian publicist, poet. 1980, he gave his signature to Letter of 40 intellectuals. 1988–1997, he was the chief editor of the magazine ''Looming''. Rapla
Rapla (German: ''Rappel'') is a town in central Estonia, the capital of Rapla County and the centre of Rapla Parish. The oldest records date back to 1241 in the Danish Census Book, when it was said that it was a small village with 8 acres of cultivated fields. By the end of the 13th century, the village centre was firmly established. At around the same time, a Cistercian monastery was built. Rapla's ambitious period of fast growth began only in the late 19th century. In 1866, a pharmacy was built, in 1868 a school, and in 1888 a hospital. In 1898, a Brick factory was opened, and in 1900, a railway line was built between Rapla and Viljandi. The old stone church was demolished in the late 19th century and a new one was built in a Romanesque style, one of the purest examples of this style in all of Estonia. Letter Of 40 Intellectuals
The Letter of 40 intellectuals, also The letter of 40 ( et, Neljakümne kiri), originally A public letter from Estonian SSR ( et, Avalik kiri Eesti NSV-st) was a public letter dated October 28, 1980 and posted a week later, in which 40 intellectuals attempted to defend the Estonian language and expressed their protest against the recklessness of the Republic-level government in dealing with youth protests that were sparked a week earlier due to the banning of a public performance of the band Propeller. The real reasons were much more deep-seated, and had to do primarily with the Russification policies of the Kremlin in occupied Estonia. The letter was addressed to the newspapers ''Pravda'', ''Rahva Hääl'' and '' Sovetskaya Estoniya''. None of these nor any other Soviet publication printed the letter. Looming (magazine)
''Looming'' (English: ''Creation'') is the oldest literary magazine in Estonia. The headquarters is in Tallinn. History The magazine was established in 1923 by the Estonian writer Friedebert Tuglas. Its purpose was the publication and popularization of Estonian contemporary literature. Virtually all known Estonian authors have contributed to the journal. During the Soviet occupation of Estonia, ''Looming'' was controlled by the Writers' Union of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic. Currently, the publication of ''Looming'' is jointly funded by the Estonian Ministry of Culture, the State ''Kultuurkapital'' Foundation and the Estonian Writers' Union.
