Andreas Kretzschmer
Franz Johann Karl Andreas Kretzschmer (1 November 1775 – 5 March 1839) was a German lawyer, secret war councilor, composer, musicologist and folk song researcher. His main folkloristic work, the Volkslied collection of 1838/40, he published under the name "A. Kretzschmer"; In a modern reprint from 1969, this name form is wrongly transformed to "August Kretzschmer". Life Born in Stettin, Kretzschmer showed a great affinity for music from his youth on. Nevertheless, at the request of his father, a government councillor, he studied law in Berlin and then became Commissioner of Justice in his home town of Stettin. When the city fell into French hands for a few years during the Coalition Wars, Kretzschmer made a name for himself through his loyalty to Prussia and was rewarded with the Iron Cross and the title of Secret War Council. August Heinrich Hoffmann Von Fallersleben
August Heinrich Hoffmann (, calling himself von Fallersleben, after his hometown; 2 April 179819 January 1874) was a German poet. He is best known for writing "Das Lied der Deutschen", whose third stanza is now the national anthem of Germany, and a number of popular children's songs, considered part of the Young Germany movement. Biography Hoffmann was born in Fallersleben in Lower Saxony, then in the duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg. The son of a merchant and mayor of his native city, he was educated at the classical schools of Helmstedt and Braunschweig, and afterwards at the universities of Göttingen and Bonn. His original intention was to study theology, but he soon devoted himself entirely to literature. Hans Ferdinand Maßmann
Hans Ferdinand Massmann (german: Maßmann; 15 August 1797 – 3 August 1874) was a German philology, philologist, known for his studies in Middle High German, Old German German language, language and literature, and for his work introducing gymnastics into schools in Prussia. Biography Massmann was born in Berlin, Margraviate of Brandenburg, where he also studied. He served in the War of the Sixth Coalition, War of Liberation, was a member of the University of Jena, Jena ''Burschenschaft'', and was present at the Wartburg festival of 1817, where he participated in the book burning. In Berlin, he had been a friend and a pupil of Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, Jahn. His radical ideas and "demagogue" sympathies brought him into difficulties with the authorities. Breitkopf & Härtel is the world's oldest music publishing house. The firm was founded in 1719 in Leipzig by Bernhard Christoph Breitkopf. The catalogue currently contains over 1,000 composers, 8,000 works and 15,000 music editions or books on music. The name "Härtel" was added when Gottfried Christoph Härtel took over the company in 1795. In 1807, Härtel began to manufacture pianos, an endeavour which lasted until 1870. The Breitkopf pianos were highly esteemed in the 19th century by pianists like Franz Liszt and Clara Schumann. In the 19th century the company was for many years the publisher of the ''Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung'', an influential music journal. The company has consistently supported contemporary composers and had close editorial collaboration with Beethoven, Haydn, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Chopin, Liszt, Wagner and Brahms. Robert Eitner
Robert Eitner (22October 18322February 1905) was a German musicologist, researcher and bibliographer. Life Robert Eitner was born and grew up in Breslau, the rapidly industrialising administrative capital of Silesia. He attended the St. Elisabeth Gymnasium (secondary school) in the city before moving on to study at the university where for five years he was taught by the organist-composer Moritz Brosig. Sources nevertheless stress that in many respects Eitner was self-taught. In 1853 he moved to Berlin, becoming a music teacher. A succession of piano compositions and songs followed. In 1863 he opened his own music school, but by now he was increasingly diverting his attention away from teaching and towards music research and writing. In 1867 he produced a "Lexicon of Dutch Composers" which won a prize from the Amsterdam "Society for the promotion of Music", although in the end it was never published. The ''Carl-Maria-von-Weber-Gesamtausgabe'' (short ''WeGA'') is a scientific-critical edition of all works of the composer Carl Maria von Weber, published by the Schott Music publishing house in Mainz. Anton Wilhelm Von Zuccalmaglio
Anton Wilhelm Florentin von Zuccalmaglio (12 April 1803 – 23 March 1869) was a German dialectologist, folklorist, folk-song collector, poet, and composer. Born in Waldbröl, he was one of six children born to politician and jurist Jakob Salentin von Zuccalmaglio and Clara Deycks. His brother Vinzenz Jakob von Zuccalmaglio was a successful writer and poet. The Von Zuccalmaglio family traced its ancestry to Italians who had settled in the Catholic Rhineland region of Germany in centuries past. The song "Kein schöner Land in dieser Zeit" (''No more beautiful country in this time'' hese times was published by him as titled ''Abendlied'' (''Evening Song'') in 1840. It was one of many in a collection of Volkslieder (''folk songs''), but in fact Anton Wilhelm von Zuccalmaglio himself is the author of "Kein schöner Land". Anklam [], formerly known as Tanglim and Wendenburg, is a town in the Western Pomerania region of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany.
