Andersson (crater)
Andersson is a lunar impact crater that lies in the southern hemisphere on the far side of the Moon. It is located just beyond the southwestern limb of the visible Moon in a location that can be viewed from the side during a favorable libration. The nearest crater of note is Guthnick to the north-northeast. Andersson is bowl-shaped, with a small central floor and no significant erosion of the rim. It lies along a low ridge in the surface that runs to the north. Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter
The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) is a NASA robotic spacecraft currently orbiting the Moon in an eccentric polar mapping orbit. Data collected by LRO have been described as essential for planning NASA's future human and robotic missions to the Moon. Its detailed mapping program is identifying safe landing sites, locating potential resources on the Moon, characterizing the radiation environment, and demonstrating new technologies. Launched on June 18, 2009, in conjunction with the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS), as the vanguard of NASA's Lunar Precursor Robotic Program, LRO was the first United States mission to the Moon in over ten years. Nectarian
The Nectarian Period of the lunar geologic timescale runs from 3920 million years ago to 3850 million years ago. It is the period during which the Nectaris Basin and other major basins were formed by large impact events. Ejecta from Nectaris form the upper part of the densely cratered terrain found in lunar highlands. It is written by Jonathan McDowell, a Center for Astrophysics Harvard & Smithsonian astrophysicist. It is updated as McDowell's schedule permits, but he tries to publish two issues each month. 9223 Leifandersson, provisional designation , is a background asteroid from the inner regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 4.5 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 18 December 1995, by astronomers of the Spacewatch program at Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona, United States. The asteroid was named in memory of Swedish astronomer Leif Erland Andersson. The assumed stony asteroid has a rotation period of 3.758 hours. Orbit and classification ''Leifandersson'' is a non-family asteroid of the main belt's background population when applying the Hierarchical Clustering Method to its proper orbital elements. Mendel-Rydberg Basin
The Mendel-Ryberg Basin is a Nectarian impact basin on the southwestern limb of the moon. It is named after the crater Mendel on the west margin and the smaller crater Rydberg north of the center of the basin. The basin is due south of the larger, younger Orientale basin, and ejecta and other geomorphological effects from the younger basin have overprinted the older one. At the center is a mass concentration (mascon), or gravitational high. The mascon was first identified by Doppler tracking of the Lunar Prospector spacecraft. The existence of the basin was confirmed by the GRAIL spacecraft. Other craters within the basin include Guthnick, De Roy, Arrhenius, Yakovkin, Graff, Andersson, Chadwick, Fényi, Blanchard, and Baade. Leif Erland Andersson
Leif Erland Andersson (4 November 1943 – 4 May 1979) was a Swedish astronomer. Early life Andersson had been a child prodigy who won the Swedish television quiz show ''10.000-kronorsfrågan'' ("The 10,000 Kronor Question") twice, the first time at age 16. From his late teen years, he was also a well-known science fiction fan in Sweden, who chaired the MalCon in 1966 in Malmö and took over editing the pioneering Swedish science fiction amateur journal, the ''Scandinavian Amateur Press Alliance'' (SAPA) after John-Henri Holmberg left the position some time after 1964. Professional career Andersson studied astronomy at Lund University, but received a scholarship to San Michele Observatory in on the island of Anacapri in Sicily in 1968. Guthnick (crater)
Guthnick is a lunar impact crater that lies on the far side of the Moon's surface from the Earth. However, it is located in the part of the far side that is sometimes brought into sight of the Earth due to libration, although it can only be seen at a low angle and during favorable lighting conditions. Guthnick is situated in the southern portion of the huge skirt of ejecta that surrounds the Mare Orientale impact basin. Less than a crater diameter to the northwest is the slightly larger crater Rydberg. To the south-southwest is the small Andersson. The outer rim of this crater is sharp-edged and free from significant erosion. There is a small outward bulge in the rim to the northeast, but otherwise the rim is nearly circular. The loose material on the inner surface has slumped down near the floor, forming a simple sloping edge around most of the sides. Libration
In lunar astronomy, libration is the wagging or wavering of the Moon perceived by Earth-bound observers and caused by changes in their perspective. It permits an observer to see slightly different hemispheres of the surface at different times. It is similar in both cause and effect to the changes in the Moon's apparent size due to changes in distance. It is caused by three mechanisms detailed below, two of which cause a relatively tiny physical libration via tidal forces exerted by the Earth. Such true librations are known as well for other moons with locked rotation.
