Anderson Ranch Arts Center
Anderson Ranch Arts Center is a non-profit arts organization founded in 1966 and located in Snowmass Village, Colorado. They host an artist in residency program and the center offers workshops and classes by artists in the summer months of June, July and August. The campus is five acres in size and offers studio space for ceramic, painting, drawing, photography, sculpture and printmaking. History The location was formerly a late 1800s working ranch. Anderson Ranch became an artists’ community in 1966 when it was founded by Paul Soldner. Other early artists involved were Daniel Rhodes, Jim Romberg, Toshiko Takahaezu, James Surls, and Charmaine Locke. The center became a nonprofit in 1973 and started offering an artist residency program in 1985. Snowmass Village is a home rule municipality in Pitkin County, Colorado, United States. The population was 2,826 at the 2010 census. A popular winter resort location for skiing and snowboarding, the town is well known as the location of the Snowmass ski area, the largest of the four nearby ski areas operated collectively as Aspen/Snowmass. Daniel Rhodes
Daniel Rhodes (May 8, 1911 – July 23, 1989) was an American artist, known as a ceramic artist, muralist, sculptor, author and educator. During his 25 years (1947–1973) on the faculty at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, in Alfred, New York (a division of the State University of New York), he built an international reputation as a potter, sculptor and authority on studio pottery. Early life and education Rhodes was born on May 8, 1911 and raised in Fort Dodge, Iowa, the son of Daniel J. and Margaret Agnes (née Brennan) Rhodes. He began his art career by enrolling in summer courses at the Art Institute of Chicago. James Surls
James Arthur Surls (born 1943) is an American modernist artist and educator, known for his large sculptures. He founded the Lawndale Alternative Arts Space at the University of Houston in the 1970s. Biography James Arthur Surls was born April 19, 1943 in Terrell, Texas. His father Joe William Surls was a carpenter and a cattle breeder. His mother Martha Lucille Surls (née Ramsey) had been made an honorary Cherokee Nation elder as one of "The Wisdom Givers". He was raised in Malakoff, Texas and spend much of his childhood helping his dad with chopping wood and building wooden structures. Surls attended Malakoff High School.
