Jaromil Jireš
Jaromil Jireš (10 December 1935 – 24 October 2001) was a director associated with the Czechoslovak New Wave movement. His 1963 film '' The Cry'' was entered into the 1964 Cannes Film Festival. It is often described as the first film of the Czechoslovak New Wave, a movement known for its dark humor, use of non-professional actors, and "art-cinema realism". Another of Jireš's prominent works is '' The Joke'' (1969), adapted from a novel by Milan Kundera. It tells the story of Ludvik Jahn, a man expelled from the Czechoslovakian Communist Party for an idle joke to his girlfriend, and the revenge he later seeks through adultery. The film was produced during the political liberalization of the 1968 Prague Spring and contains many scenes which satirize and criticize the country's communist leadership. Magdaléna Vášáryová
Magdaléna Vášáryová (; referred also as Magda Vášáryová ; born 26 August 1948) is a Slovak actress and diplomat, prominent for her liberal anti-nationalist stances. In 1971, she completed her studies at Comenius University in Bratislava. Until 1989, she acted in several Slovak theatres, including Slovak National Theatre, and in numerous movies. She was ambassador of Czechoslovakia in Austria (1990-1993) and ambassador of Slovakia in Poland (2000-2005). She was one of the candidates in the 1999 presidential election, but did not advance to the second round of the election. From February 2005 to July 2006, she held the position of State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Slovakia. Marie Kudeříková
Marie Kudeříková (also known as Maruška Kudeříková) (24 March 1921, Vnorovy, Czechoslovakia – 26 March 1943 Wrocław, Nazi Germany (today Poland)) was a student active in the Czech resistance to Nazi occupation during World War II. In 1941 she was arrested by Gestapo and at a subsequent trial she was sentenced to death. She was executed in 1943. While in prison, she wrote 32 letters, later published under the title ''"Zlomky života: listy z vězení"'' (''Fragments of Life: Letters from Prison''). Kudeříková was a sympathizer of communist ideas and the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia later used her legacy as its propaganda tool. Viera Strnisková (30 October 1929 – 31 August 2013) was a Slovak actress. Biography Viera Strnisková was born on 30 October 1929 in Hlohovec and grew up in Modrý Kameň. Her father was a medical doctor and she often accompanied him to visit patients. Her mother was originally from Czechia. Following the footsteps of her father, she enrolled to study medicine at the Comenius University but she failed to graduate. Later she unsuccessfully attempted to study law. Eventually, she graduated in theatre studies and literary science. Already as a student, Strnisková started acting in the New Scene theatre in Bratislava. After graduation, Strnisková joined the Municipal Theatre of Kolín (1950-1951). Later, she acted in the theatre in Zvolen (1953-1957), Nitra (1957-1962), the Slovak National Theatre (1962-2004) and finally at the theatre of Spišská Nová Ves (2004-2008).
