Rasputina (band)
Rasputina is an American rock band based in New York City, known for their unconventional music style, as well as their fascination with historical allegories and fashion, especially those pertaining to the Victorian era. The group is fronted by cellist/vocalist Melora Creager, who writes the music and lyrics and creates art for the band's albums, singles, and website. History In 1989, Creager wrote a manifesto, and placed an ad in The Village Voice seeking women to form an electric cello choir. Julia Kent, then an editor at the Village Voice, was the first respondent. The original group of nine was whittled to three. They named themselves "Rasputina", after one of Creager's songs. The group performed frequently and became a local favorite in New York City. Columbia Records' A&R representative and producer Jimmy Boyle saw the group perform at a New York festival. Melora Creager
Melora Creager (born March 25, 1966) is an American cellist, singer-songwriter, performing artist and founder of the rock band Rasputina. Early life, beginnings and Rasputina Born in Kansas City, Missouri, and adopted by a graphic designer and physicist, Creager was raised in Emporia, Kansas. She started studying music at the age of 5, and at age 9 began playing the cello. As a child she was also a member of the Wichita Youth Symphony. Though she briefly quit playing in her teen years, after Creager moved to the east coast to attend Philadelphia College of Art and Parsons School of Design, she was convinced by friends to take it up again. In the late 1980s she played with the New York indie rock band Ultra Vivid Scene. In 1991, Creager founded alternative cello ensemble Rasputina by writing a manifesto and placing a want-ad in the Village Voice stating "electric cellists wanted". Sister Kinderhook
Sister Kinderhook is the sixth full-length album from American rock band Rasputina. It was released on June 15, 2010. The new album brings with it a fresh lineup in the form of Daniel DeJesus in place of Sarah Bowman in second chair and Catie D'Amica replacing Jonathon Tebeest on drums and percussion. D'Amica was present during the inception, recording and production of the album, however, she has since left the group in order to, as Creager jokes, "go to massage therapy school". She was replaced by Creager's friend, Julie Griner for one show. More recently, Melissa Bell has been drafted into the lineup as percussionist. Another new addition to Rasputina's repertoire is the heavy use of the banjo which replaces the dulcimer featured prominently in the last two albums. ''Melora a la Basilica'' is a 1000 unit collector's edition live recording made by American cello rock band Rasputina in Basilica Industria in Hudson, NY, "a behemoth of a defunct glue factory". It is a collection of previous Rasputina songs reworked with new second chair cellist Daniel DeJesus and covers of songs by Goldfrapp, Pearl Jam and the '' Sweeney Todd'' and ''A Clockwork Orange'' soundtracks. The sound and atmosphere of the record was patterned after the recitals given earlier in the year by Creager and DeJesus. Sovay
Sovay is a traditional English folk song () about a young woman who dresses and arms herself as a highwayman in order to test her suitor. In disguise she robs her suitor of nearly all his possessions, but even under threat of death he refuses to give up the gold ring given by Sovay, thus proving his devotion. Sovay subsequently confesses the ruse to her lover and returns his various possessions, admonishing him only that had he indeed given up the ring, she would have killed him. The name 'Sovay' is probably a corruption of 'Sophie' or 'Sylvie' – both of which appear instead in some versions of the song. History The Bodleian Library has a printed version called "Sylvia's Request and William's Denial" dated to 1877.
