Among The Cinders
''Among the Cinders'' is a 1983 New Zealand drama film directed by Rolf Hädrich and starring Paul O'Shea, Amanda Jones, Derek Hardwick and Yvonne Lawley. After a hunting accident in which his friend is killed (for which he blames himself) a boy (Nick) runs away from home and goes to live with his grandparents, where he matures into a man. The film is based on the 1965 novel of the same name by New Zealand author Maurice Shadbolt, who appears in the film as Frank Flinders. Premise Nick Flinders is a lonely and moody youth. The one friend he has is a Maori boy, Sam Waikai. While they are hunting together in the bush, Sam is accidentally killed. Nick is injured, but he feels guilty and responsible for his friend's death. Rolf Hädrich (24 April 1931 – 29 October 2000) was a German film director and screenwriter. He directed 39 films between 1958 and 1989. His film ''Verspätung in Marienborn'' (US title: ''Stop Train 349'') was entered into the 13th Berlin International Film Festival. Michael Haigh
Michael Haigh (1935 – 31 October 1993) was a New Zealand actor, narrator and teacher. Early life Haigh grew up in Wellington, New Zealand. His parents separated when he was 10 years old. Haigh was estranged from his father, an actor, and his mother, Dorothy, a radio broadcaster, raised him. Career Haigh grew interested in theatre while attending Rongotai College. After leaving school he considered going into either journalism or teaching, but he settled on teaching and attended Wellington Teachers’ Training College in the 1950s. During this time, Haigh was active with The Thespians and Unity Theatre in Wellington. Haigh was a teacher for 15 years. For the last seven of those years, Haigh, his wife, and two children were based in the far north of New Zealand, where he was teaching.
