Barbara Joan Estelle Amiel, Baroness Black of Crossharbour, DSS (born 4 December 1940), is a British-Canadian conservative journalist, writer, and socialite. She is married to former media proprietor Conrad Black. Early life and career Amiel was born into a Jewish family in Watford, Hertfordshire, England, the daughter of Vera Isserles (née Barnett) and Harold Joffre Amiel. A cousin was the oncologist, broadcaster and humorist Rob Buckman. Her father, originally a solicitor, became a Lieutenant Colonel serving in Italy during World War II, but was discharged because of injury. Her parents divorced when she was eight, after her father left her mother for another woman. Amiel attended North London Collegiate School in Edgware, Greater London, an independent girls' school. Amiel's mother remarried and, in November 1952, the couple emigrated with Barbara, her sister and half-brother, to Hamilton, Ontario. Gausbert Amiel
Gau(s)bert Amiel or Gausbertz Amiels was a 13th-century Gascon troubadour. His only surviving song (''canso'') is ''Breu vers per tal que meins y poing'', a humorous satire of contemporary courtly poetry. This lone example of Gausbert's work is well represented in the manuscripts, however, appearing six, labelled A, D, I, K, N, and V. The poem is only ascribed to him in MS "D", where a marginal note names "Gibert Amiels" as the author. Based on the manuscripts, the poem must have been written between 1200 and 1254. All that is known of Gausbert that cannot be gleaned from his poem is found in his ''vida'', which, however, seem to use, as its primary source, his poem. He is described as "a poor knight, courteous and skilled in arms", and "he never fell in love with a dame nobler than he". The purpose of his surviving poem is to attack the ''rics'' (rich men, implying nobility and rank as well as material wealth) and their pursuance of younger women, who are poor Gausbert's targets. ... Henri Frédéric Amiel (; 27 September 1821 – 11 May 1881) was a Swiss moral philosopher, poet, and critic. Biography Born in Geneva in 1821, Amiel was descended from a Huguenot family that moved to Switzerland following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. After losing his parents at an early age, Amiel travelled widely, became intimate with the intellectual leaders of Europe, and made a special study of German philosophy in Berlin. In 1849 he was appointed professor of aesthetics at the academy of Geneva, and in 1854 became professor of moral philosophy. These appointments, conferred by the democratic party, deprived him of the support of the aristocratic party, whose patronage dominated all the culture of the city. This isolation inspired the one book by which Amiel is still known, the ''Journal Intime'' ("Private Journal"), which, published after his death, obtained a European reputation. Jack Amiel is an American TV writer, producer and screenwriter. He is best known for co-creating Cinemax's period medical drama ''The Knick'', and for writing the films ''Raising Helen'' (2004), '' The Shaggy Dog'' (2006) and ''Big Miracle'' (2012), all with writing partner Michael Begler. Early life Amiel was born and raised in Manhattan, New York. He attended Fieldston School in New York City, and the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he majored in History. He met his future writing partner Michael Begler while they were in college together. Amiel is of Jewish background. Career After college, Amiel moved to Los Angeles and worked as a PA on a number of Fox sitcoms. Jon Amiel (born 20 May 1948) is an English director who has worked in film and television in both the UK and the US. After receiving a BAFTA Award nomination for the BBC series ''The Singing Detective'' (1986), he went on to direct films, including ''Sommersby'' (1993), ''Copycat'' (1995), ''Entrapment'' (1999) and ''The Core'' (2003). Biography Amiel was born in London, to parents who grew up in the East End of London. Amiel's grandparents were immigrants Isaac and Mary Amiel – Polish and Russian Jews. Stephanie Anne Amiel, Lady Alberti, (born 17 October 1954) is a British physician and academic, specialising in type 1 diabetes. Since 1995, she has been the R. D. Lawrence Professor of Diabetic Medicine at King's College London and a consultant at King's College Hospital. Early life and education Amiel was born on 17 October 1954 in Farnborough, Kent, England. She was educated at Baston School for Girls, an all-girls independent school in Kent. She studied at Guy's Hospital School of Medicine, graduating with a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in 1975 and Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degrees in 1978. Thierry Amiel (born 18 October 1982) is a French singer and songwriter from Marseille, France. He rose to fame after coming in second place to Jonatan Cerrada on the first edition of the French ''Pop Idol'', ''À la Recherche de la Nouvelle Star''. Biography Thierry grew up in Auriol, a town in Bouches-du-Rhône.
