ATA Martial Arts, formerly known as the American Taekwondo Association (ATA), was founded in 1969 in Omaha, Nebraska by Haeng Ung Lee of South Korea. ''ATA Martial Arts'' has been headquartered in Little Rock, Arkansas since 1977, and presided over by M.K. Lee since July 2022. With over 300,000 active members in over 21 countries —800 schools and 120,000 members in the United States alone—it is one of the largest taekwondo organizations in the world. Haeng Ung Lee
Haeng Ung ("H.U.") Lee (July 20, 1936 – October 5, 2000) was the co-founder and first Grand Master of the American Taekwondo Association. Career H.U. Lee was born in Manchuria, China in 1936. After World War II, his family relocated to South Korea, where Lee began his martial arts training in 1953, and earned his first degree black belt in 1954. In 1956, Lee entered the Korean army as a trainer for special troops. He spent this time as part of an intelligence unit on Baengnyoung Island. After three years, he retired and opened a taekwondo school at Osan Air Base. There, he met Richard Reed, who would later be the sponsor to his emigration to the United States in 1962. Lee moved to Omaha, Nebraska, where in 1969 he co-founded the American Taekwondo Association. Omaha remained the organization's headquarters until Lee relocated it to Little Rock, Arkansas in 1977. Black Belt (martial Arts)
In East Asian martial arts, the black belt is associated with expertise, but may indicate only competence, depending on the martial art. The use of colored belts is a relatively recent invention dating from the 1880s. Origin The systematic use of belt colour to denote rank was first used in Japan by Jigoro Kano, the founder of judo in the 1880s. Previously, Japanese Koryu instructors tended to provide rank certificates only. Initially the wide obi was used. As practitioners trained in a kimono, only white and black obi were used. This kind of ranking is less common in arts that do not claim a far Eastern origin, though it is used in the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program. ''Taekwondo'', ''Tae Kwon Do'' or ''Taekwon-Do'' (; ko, 태권도/跆拳道 ) is a Korean form of martial arts involving punching and kicking techniques, with emphasis on head-height kicks, spinning jump kicks, and fast kicking techniques. The literal translation for tae kwon do is "kicking", "punching", and "the art or way of". In Ho Lee
In Ho Lee (born 1955) is the third and previous Presiding Grand Master of Songahm Taekwondo, the American Taekwondo Association. In Ho Lee was born in Seoul City, Korea, two years after the end of the Korean War. He began to study and practice Taekwondo as a boy. In 1976, following a year of military service, he joined his brother, Haeng Ung Lee's Songahm Taekwondo school, in the United States. In Ho Lee became known for his jump round kick and lightning speed. Dobok
Dobok is the uniform worn by practitioners of Korean martial arts. ''Do'' means "way" and ''bok'' means "clothing." The dobok is came from the Japanese '' keikogi/dōgi'', used in Japanese martial arts, such as judo. The dobok comes in many colors, though white and black are the most common. The dobok may have the reverse in a different colour than the rest of the dobok. They are made in a variety of materials, ranging from traditional cotton to cotton-polyester blends. The pants and sleeves of the dobok are wider and longer than the traditional Japanese keikogi. Due to this, practitioners often wear a dobok modeled after the Korean hanbok. The dobok of World Taekwondo Federation-style taekwondo practitioners usually have v-neck jackets, tailored after the design of the hanbok. Soon Ho Lee
Soon Ho Lee is the Grand Master Emeritus of Songahm Taekwondo, the American Taekwondo Association. He was given the title at ATA's World Championships in June 2002, succeeding his brother Haeng Ung Lee. In 1969, Soon Ho Lee joined his elder brother in the United States. His goal was to expand his academic opportunities, at the time he did not intend to become a Taekwondo instructor.
