The American Soccer League has been a name used by four different professional soccer sports league in the United States. In 1988, the third American Soccer League was created as an East Coast counterpart to the West Coast-based Western Soccer Alliance. Association football, more commonly known as football or soccer, is a team sport played between two teams of 11 players who primarily use their feet to propel the ball around a rectangular field called a pitch. Washington Diplomats (1988–90)
The Washington Diplomats are an American soccer club representing Washington, D.C. Throughout their playing existence, the club played their home games at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium and indoor soccer, indoor home matches at the neighboring D.C. Armory. Founded as an expansion franchise in 1974, the Diplomats competed in the now-defunct North American Soccer League (1968-1984), North American Soccer League, then the top-tier soccer league of the American soccer pyramid. Plagued with mediocrity in their first few seasons of existence, the Diplomats did not qualify for the playoffs until 1976, their third year in the league. Mirko Castillo (born August 30, 1962 in Lima, Peru) was a Peruvian soccer forward who spent his entire professional career in the United States. He played two seasons in the American Soccer League, tying Ricardo Alonso as the 1990 league leading scorer. He then played two seasons in the American Professional Soccer League and over a dozen years playing in five indoor leagues. Outdoor Although Castillo began playing soccer in Peru, including time on the Alianza Lima youth teams, he moved to the United States in 1988 to sign with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers of the American Soccer League. Ricardo Alonso
Ricardo Alonso was a soccer player who began as a forward before moving to defender later in his career. Alonso spent six seasons in the North American Soccer League, four in Major Indoor Soccer League, at least three in the American Indoor Soccer Association, one in the American Soccer League and two in the American Professional Soccer League. He was born in Argentina. Outdoor NASL Alonso signed with the Minnesota Kicks of the North American Soccer League in 1979 and spent three seasons with the team. He then moved to the Jacksonville Tea Men for the 1982 season. That year, he scored twenty-one goals in thirty games, earning first team All Star recognition. In 1983, he signed with the Chicago Sting when the Tea Men left the NASL. Jorge Acosta
Jorge Acosta (born May 29, 1964) is a Colombian-born American retired soccer forward. He spent most of his career in the lower U.S. divisions, as well as four in the Colombian first division. He also earned twelve caps with the U.S. national team in 1991 and 1992. Early life Acosta was born in Colombia, but attended Kennedy High School in Paterson, New Jersey where he played on the boys' soccer team. In two seasons, he scored sixty-three goals, including 34 as a senior. After graduating from high school in 1982, Acosta attended Long Island University. Career Professional In 1988, he signed with the New Jersey Eagles of the American Soccer League (ASL). The Eagles played their home games in historic Hinchliffe Stadium. That season he led the ASL in scoring with fourteen goals, garnering All Star honors. Acosta spent two more seasons with the Eagles, his scoring declining each year. The Fort Lauderdale Strikers were an American soccer team established in 1988 as part of the third American Soccer League. In 1990, it moved to the American Professional Soccer League where it spent five seasons before folding in 1994. The Strikers won the 1989 ASL championship, as well as the 1989 National Pro Soccer Championship. History In October 1987, the American Soccer League announced that it had awarded a franchise to Joe Robbie which would be located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Robbie, who owned the Minnesota Strikers of the Major Indoor Soccer League announced his intentions of resurrecting the name Fort Lauderdale Strikers and hired Wim Suurbier to coach the team.
