This is a list of ambassadors of the United States to Malta. Initially a part of the British Empire, Malta was granted full independence as the State of Malta on September 21, 1964. The United States diplomatic recognition, recognized the new nation and established full diplomatic relations after its independence, and retained relations after Malta became a republic in 1974. A letter of credence (french: Lettre de créance) is a formal diplomatic letter that designates a diplomat as ambassador to another sovereign state. Commonly known as diplomatic credentials, the letter is addressed from one head of state to another, asking them to give credence (french: créance) to the ambassador's claim of speaking for their country. The letter is presented personally by the ambassador-designate to the receiving head of state in a formal ceremony, marking the beginning of the ambassadorship. Letters of credence are traditionally written in French, the ''lingua franca'' of diplomacy. However, they may also be written in the official language of the sending state. Molly Bordonaro is managing partner of Gerding Edlen and the former American ambassador to Malta (2005–09). Bordonaro was born in Portland, Oregon. She earned an undergraduate degree from University of Colorado. She began working at Gerding Edlen in 2009, and was made managing partner in 2017. She is also a member of the board of directors for Moda Health and the National Women's History Museum. She is also a member of the Pension Real Estate Association, Technology and Sustainability Affinity Group, and on the advisory board for commercial real estate at Portland State University. Kathryn Linda Haycock Proffitt (born 1951) was an American non-career appointee who served as the ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to Malta from 1998 until 2001. Prior to her appointment, Proffitt had been president, executive officer and founder of Call-America, a telecommunications company. She was also vice chairman of the Competitive Telecommunications Association (CompTel) and director of ICG Communications, Inc. Iran Hostage Crisis
On November 4, 1979, 52 United States diplomats and citizens were held hostage after a group of militarized Iranian college students belonging to the Muslim Student Followers of the Imam's Line, who supported the Iranian Revolution, took over the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and took them as hostages. A diplomatic standoff ensued. The hostages were held for 444 days, being released on January 20, 1981. Western media described the crisis as an "entanglement" of "vengeance and mutual incomprehension." U.S. President Jimmy Carter called the hostage-taking an act of "blackmail" and the hostages "victims of terrorism and anarchy." The Embassy of the United States of America in Tehran was the American diplomatic mission in the Imperial State of Iran. Direct bilateral diplomatic relations between the two governments were severed following the Iranian Revolution in 1979, and the subsequent seizure of the embassy in November 1979. History The embassy was designed in 1948 by the architect Ides van der Gracht, the designer of the Embassy of the United States in Ankara. It was a long, low two-story brick building, similar to American high schools built in the 1930s and 1940s.
