Kathryn Linda Haycock Proffitt
Kathryn Linda Haycock Proffitt (born 1951) was an American non-career appointee who served as the ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to Malta from 1998 until 2001. Prior to her appointment, Proffitt had been president, executive officer and founder of Call-America, a telecommunications company. She was also vice chairman of the Competitive Telecommunications Association (CompTel) and director of ICG Communications, Inc. Before that, Proffitt was a registered dental hygienist in Toppenish, Washington, and was the acting director of Dental Hygiene at Yakima Valley College. She attended Portland State University and graduated in 1972 from the University of Oregon Dental School. An ambassador is an official envoy, especially a high-ranking diplomat who represents a state and is usually accredited to another sovereign state or to an international organization as the resident representative of their own government or sovereign or appointed for a special and often temporary diplomatic assignment. The word is also used informally for people who are known, without national appointment, to represent certain professions, activities, and fields of endeavor, such as sales.
