Amaral (surname)
Amaral ( or ) is a Portuguese-language surname of toponymic origin (from the Central-Northern Portuguese region of Beira), relatively common in Portugal and Brazil, amongst other countries. Its meaning probably comes from a plantation of a variety of grapes ( azal tinto) known as ''amara'' (from the Latin language ''amarus''/''amara'' —bitter—, because of the taste of the fruit), used to produce wine, and the suffix ''-al'' denotes ''plantation''. Amaral means ''a plantation of amaras''. This family name is considered to be of high lineage because it descends from the King Ramiro II of León. The current people with this surname are probably of pre-Roman Lusitanian, Christian Visigothic and Sephardic Jewish descent. Beira (Portugal)
Beira () was one of the six traditional provinces or ''comarcas'' of Portugal. The territorial extension is different from that of the area called ''the Beiras'', which refers to three provinces of 1936, Beira Alta, Beira Baixa and Beira Litoral. Geography The most important cities within the borders of the traditional province are: Coimbra, Aveiro, Leiria, Viseu, Castelo Branco, Guarda, Figueira da Foz, Covilhã and Pinhel. Maria do Carmo Estanislau do Amaral (born 1959) is a Brazilian botanist, biologist, curator, and academic., who has worked, since 2011, on teaching and research in the Department of Biology, Universidad Estatal de Campinas. Maria Adelaide Amaral (born 1 July 1942, in Alfena) is a Portuguese Brazilian playwright, screenwriter, and novelist. A good deal of her plays concern disaffected urban professionals. She has been classed as among the two major women playwrights of Brazil, the other being Leilah Assunção. In 1994, Maria Adelaide Amaral biographed the Brazilian comedian Dercy Gonçalves. Luís A. N. Amaral (born 12 July 1968) is a Portuguese physicist recognized for his research in complex systems and complex networks. His specific research interests include the emergence, evolution, and stability of complex social and biological systems. He is best known for his work in network classification and cartographic methods for uncovering the organization of complex networks. He is currently professor at McCormick School of Engineering and Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University. Francisco Caetano Keil Coelho do Amaral, 2nd Viscount of Pedralva (Lisbon, 28 April 1910 – Lisbon, 19 February 1975), was a Portuguese architect, painter and photographer. David Gil Amaral is a professor of psychiatry at the University of California, Davis, United States, and since 1998 has been the research director at the M.I.N.D. Institute, an affiliate of UC Davis, engaged in interdisciplinary research into the causes and treatment of autism and related neurodevelopmental disorders. Anthony Amaral (19 August 19309 June 1982) was an American West Historian and horse trainer. He wrote books and articles on movie and feral horses, as well a biography of Western novelist and artist Will James. Biography Personal life Amaral was born in New York, but moved to Carson City, Nevada at an early age. He served in the U.S. Army in the early 1950s during the Korean War, where he reached the rank of 1st Lieut. After his discharge, he attended California State Polytechnic University, Pomona then stayed on as a horse trainer at the W. K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Center. His first known published article was about the Center. He married Loretta Anne Richey in 1965 in Napa California; was later divorced in 1971, in Carson City, Nevada.
