Alvord Desert
The Alvord Desert is a desert located in Harney County, in southeastern Oregon in the Western United States. It is roughly southeast of Steens Mountain. The Alvord Desert is a dry lake bed and averages of rain a year. Two mountain ranges separate it from the Pacific Ocean—the Coast Range, and the Cascade Mountains. Along with Steens Mountain, these topographical features create a rain shadow. The Alvord Desert lies at an elevation of approximately . During the dry season the surface is sufficiently flat for driving or landing small aircraft. Vehicle driving attempts to score land speed records are performed on the dry lake bed. The women's world land speed record was set in 1976 by Kitty O'Neil at , later surpassed in 2019 by Jessi Combs at , although the latter died in the process because of a crash. Alvord House
The Alvord House is a historic stone farmhouse in the town of Salina, New York, just north of Syracuse. The Alvord family were merchants in the then-emerging salt manufacturing business in the Salina area in the early 19th century. In 1835, this house was constructed on what was then a large tract of farmland. It was the main house amongst a small cluster of other homes and outbuildings on the family farm. Zurich, California
Zurich (formerly, Alvord and Station) is a former settlement in Inyo County, California. It was a stop of the Carson and Colorado Railway. It is located northeast of Big Pine, at an elevation of 3934 feet (1199 m). Alvord is a town in Wise County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,351 in 2020. Originally known as Nina, Alvord adopted its present name in 1882 in honor of the president of the Fort Worth and Denver Railway. There is no connection with the Arizona bandit Burt Alvord. A post office was established in 1882. By 1890, Alvord was a retail center for area farmers. In 1925, Alvord had 1,376 residents (42 more than in 2010), a high school, an elementary school, four churches, and a weekly newspaper. The Burlington Northern Railroad stopped there. The population dropped during the Great Depression because of a decline in watermelon farms and cattle ranches. In 1940, the population totaled 821, with 35 businesses; in 1960, 720 people and 19 businesses; in 1990, 865 residents and 16 businesses. In 2000, the population was 1,007, with 62 businesses.
