Benjamin Alvord (August 18, 1813 – October 16, 1884) was an American soldier, mathematician, and botanist. Early life and career Alvord was born in Rutland, Vermont, where he developed an interest in nature. He attended the United States Military Academy and displayed a talent in mathematics. William Crawford "Uncle Bill" Alvord (August 10, 1863 in St. Louis, Missouri – April 7, 1927 in St. Petersburg, Florida) was a professional baseball third baseman. He played all or part of five seasons in Major League Baseball between 1885 and 1893. Alvord made his major league debut in 1885, his first professional season, appearing in two games for the National League St. Louis Maroons, which had played the previous year in the short-lived Union Association. He was one of several players the Maroons tried in place of their regular third baseman, Ed Caskin, who was in the midst of a poor season in which he batted just .179. Albert "Burt" Alvord (September 11, 1867 – after 1910) was an American lawman and later outlaw of the Old West. Alvord began his career in law enforcement in 1886 as a deputy under Sheriff John Slaughter in Cochise County, Arizona, but turned to train robbery by the beginning of the 20th century. Early life Albert W. Alvord was born to Charles E. Alvord and his wife Lucy on September 11, 1867, in Plumas County, California. His father, a native of New York, worked as a prospector and mechanic for mining companies, but eventually came to hold public offices such as constable and justice of the peace in several of the places that the family lived. Edith Vosburgh Alvord (1875-1962) was an American suffragist and active Detroit clubwoman. Biography Alvord was born in Battle Creek, Michigan, in 1875. At twenty years old (in 1895), she began attending Olivet College, where she would graduate in 1899. After graduating, she was employed as an English and Latin teacher, teaching in Morris, Illinois. After marrying W.R. Alvord in 1908, she moved to Detroit. The first club she became involved in was the Twentieth Century Club of Detroit, which she would be elected president of in 1913. She was president for a short time, before resigning to take the presidency of the Detroit Federation of Women's Clubs, and later would become the president of the Michigan Federation of Women's Clubs. Henry Elijah Alvord (March 11, 1844 – October 1, 1904) was an American university administrator, educator, and Army officer. He served as the president of the Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College (now Oklahoma State University) and the Maryland Agricultural College (now the University of Maryland) as well teaching Military Science at Massachusetts Agricultural College (Now the University of Massachusetts – Amherst). Lori Arviso Alvord (born 1958) is an American surgeon and author. She is perhaps best known for being the first Diné woman to ever become board certified in surgery. Her autobiography, ''The Scalpel and the Silver Bear'', has brought increased attention to her career as a surgeon and has sold over 50,000 copies.
