Alva, Gotland
Alva is a populated area, a socken (not to be confused with parish), on the Swedish island of Gotland. It comprises the same area as the administrative Alva District, established on 1January 2016. Geography Alva is the name of the socken as well as the district. It is also the name of the small village surrounding the medieval Alva Church, sometimes referred to as ''Alva kyrkby''. Gutnish Language
Gutnish ( ), or rarely Gutnic ( sv, gutniska or ), refers to the original language spoken on parts of the islands of Gotland and Fårö. The different dialects of Gutnish, while stemming from the Old Gutnish ( sv, Forngutniska) variety of Old Norse, are sometimes considered part of modern Swedish. Gutnish exists in two variants, Mainland Gutnish (''Storlandsgutamål'' or ''Storlandsmål''), mostly spoken in the southern and southeastern portion of Gotland, where the dialect of Lau, Gotland, Lau became the standard form on the Main Island (''Lau Gutnish'' → ''Laumål''), and Fårömål dialect, Fårö Gutnish (Gutnish: ''Faroymal''; sv, Fårömål), spoken on the island of Fårö. Hemse is a locality situated on the Swedish island of Gotland with 1,700 inhabitants in 2014. It is the second largest locality (after Visby) on the island. Alva Church
Alva Church ( sv, Alva kyrka) is a medieval church in Alva on the Swedish island of Gotland. The oldest parts of the church date from the late 12th century; with the halted construction of the tower about a century later, building activity ceased. The church contains medieval murals as well as a number of medieval furnishings and pieces of art. It lies in the Diocese of Visby of the Church of Sweden. History and architecture The oldest parts of the church are the late Romanesque choir and the apse, dating from the late 12th century. To this the nave was added during the late part of the same century. Construction of the broad tower started about a hundred years later but was never finished; hence the somewhat squat appearance of the church today. It seems in fact that construction of the church came to a rapid end: apart from the half-finished tower, the main southern portal also seems to have been finished in a haphazard, chaotic way. The Parishes of the Church of Sweden ( sv, Svenska kyrkans församlingar) are subdivisions within the Church of Sweden that historically were called ''socken'' but nowadays are called ''församling''. Similar units were used for municipal (''landskommun'') and cadastral purposes (''jordebokssocknar'' or ''jordregistersocknar'') until the 20th century. After the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century the church also became a state church and as such was charged with administrative tasks like as keeping the civic registry.
