Altamont Diary
''Altamont Diary'' is the debut album by Melbourne electronica band Black Cab. Released in 2004, it is a concept album based on the ill-fated 1969 free concert at Altamont Speedway in California headlined by the Rolling Stones. David Fricke wrote in US '' Rolling Stone'' magazine: “With bloodied-fuzz guitars, hellish electronics and sound bites from ''Gimme Shelter'', the Australian duo Black Cab has created a riveting, album-length memorial to the fatal folly of the Rolling Stones' free concert at Altamont Speedway.” Band programmer Andrew Coates said he came up with the idea while living in San Francisco. "In a collectors' shop I found the issue of ''Rolling Stone'' magazine that came out after Altamont with a 20-page special. The album grew from there, loosely inspired by the events of a day which ended so badly, the end of the summer of love." Black Cab is a Melbourne based drone and electronica group. The band has released six studio albums. Biography 1999-2008: ''Altamont Diary'' & ''Jesus East'' Melbourne-based Australian band Black Cab's principal songwriters are guitarist James Lee and vocalist Andrew Coates, who originally performed together in early 1990s industrial rock group Foil. After an initial collaboration in 1999 produced a limited edition 3 track EP entitled ''Illinois Chapter'', Coates moved to San Francisco and began writing what would become the band's first full length album '' Altamont Diary'' (2004), a concept album loosely based on the Rolling Stones' Altamont Free Concert. ''Jesus East'' is the second album by Melbourne electronica band Black Cab, released in 2006. The album was described as "sitar-drenched, blending Indian instruments (looped and droning) with driving rock’n’roll and country guitar stylings". Band member Andrew Coates explained: "The album's two musical signposts are the Beatles' sitar-drenched " Tomorrow Never Knows" and German Krautrock duo Neu!. We kind of had this theme which was George Harrison goes to an ashram in India and comes back to Germany via the autobahn. Altamont Free Concert
The Altamont Speedway Free Festival was a counterculture rock concert in the United States, held on Saturday, December 6, 1969, at the Altamont Speedway outside of Livermore, California. Approximately 300,000 attended the concert, and some anticipated that it would be a "Woodstock West". The Woodstock festival was held in Bethel, New York, in mid-August, less than four months earlier. The event is remembered for considerable violence, including the stabbing death of Meredith Hunter and three accidental deaths: two by a hit-and-run car accident, and one by an LSD-induced drowning in an irrigation canal. Scores were injured, numerous cars were stolen (and subsequently abandoned) and there was extensive property damage. Altamont Raceway Park was a motorsports race track in the Western United States, western United States, located Northern California, northern California, west of Tracy, California, Tracy.
