Origins The name may have evolved from the Middle English given name "Alstan", the prefix, ''Al-'' itself derived from different Old English words ("noble", "elf", "old", "shrine", "temple"), and the suffix ''-stan'' ("stone") derived from pre 7th century Old English. The oldest public record of this derivation is found in 1279 in Cambridgeshire. One branch of this name may have been taken from the manor of a Saxon Lord called Alstanus, who had his manor in Stambourne, North East Essex. Ashanti Alston
Ashanti Omowali Alston (born 1954) is an anarchist activist, speaker, writer, and former member of the Black Panther Party and Black Liberation Army. From 1974 to 1985, he spent time in prison for bank robbery, which caused him to become further engaged in politics. He is currently on the Steering Committee of the Jericho Movement to free what they refer to as “political prisoners” in the US. Alston resides in Providence, Rhode Island. Gerald Alston (born November 8, 1951) is an American soul/R&B singer, and the lead singer of the Grammy Award winning group The Manhattans between late 1970 and 1988, recording 25 top 40 R&B and 12 Hot 100 Pop Singles. Alston was lead singer on their most successful 1976 Platinum song " Kiss and Say Goodbye", which topped all U.S. pop and R&B charts and was number one in four countries. Garvin Alston
Garvin James Alston Sr. (born December 8, 1971) is an American professional baseball right-handed pitcher who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Colorado Rockies in 1996. After retiring from playing, he entered coaching and previously served as the pitching coach for the Minnesota Twins. Edward Richard Alston (1 December 1845 – 7 March 1881) was a Scottish zoologist. Alston was born at Stockbriggs, near Lesmahagow, on 1 December 1845. He was delicate in youth, so chiefly self-educated at home. He very early contributed to ''The Zoologist'' and various Scottish magazines, and ultimately became an acknowledged authority on mammalia and birds. Sir Edward Alston (1595–24 December 1669), was the president of the College of Physicians. Alston was born in Suffolk, son of Edward Alston of Edwardstone, and was educated at St. John's College, Cambridge. He graduated B.A. 1615, M.D. 1626. In 1631 he was elected a fellow of the College of Physicians, and was president from 1655 until 1666. At the Restoration he was knighted (3 September 1660). Derrick Samuel Alston Sr. (born August 20, 1972) is an American former basketball player who is the head coach for the Westchester Knicks of the NBA G League. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the New York Yankees, Oakland Athletics, and Cleveland Indians. He attended Concordia College, where he participated in college baseball. Dean John Douglas Alston (born 1950) is an Australian cartoonist who became the editorial cartoonist of ''The West Australian'' newspaper in 1986. Biography Dean Alston was born in South Perth, Western Australia. He grew up in Mount Pleasant and attended Applecross Senior High School. Charles Henry Alston (November 28, 1907 – April 27, 1977) was an American painter, sculptor, illustrator, muralist and teacher who lived and worked in the New York City neighborhood of Harlem. Alston was active in the Harlem Renaissance; Alston was the first African-American supervisor for the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project. Alston designed and painted murals at the Harlem Hospital and the Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Building. Charles Alston (1683 – 22 November 1760) was a Scottish botanist. Career Alston was born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, and was apparently raised by the Duke and Duchess of Hamilton. In 1715 he went to Leyden to study under the Dutch physician Hermann Boerhaave. On his return to Scotland he became lecturer in '' materia medica'' and botany at Edinburgh and also superintendent of the botanical gardens. He was a critic of Linnaeus's system of plant classification. He was appointed Regius Keeper of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh in 1716, holding the position until 1760.
