Alpine Skiing At The 1984 Winter Olympics – Women's Downhill
The Women's Downhill competition of the Sarajevo 1984 Olympics was held at Jahorina on Thursday, February 16. It was the tenth edition of the event, which was established in 1948. The defending world champion was Gerry Sorensen of Canada, while Switzerland's Doris De Agostini was the defending World Cup downhill champion and Switzerland's Maria Walliser led the current season. Defending Olympic champion Annemarie Moser-Pröll and De Agostini had both retired from competition. The race was delayed five days, due to weather and scheduling conflicts. Alpine skiing, or downhill skiing, is the pastime of sliding down snow-covered slopes on skis with fixed-heel bindings, unlike other types of skiing ( cross-country, Telemark, or ski jumping), which use skis with free-heel bindings. Laurie Graham
Laurie Graham, (born March 30, 1960) is a former Canadian downhill skier. Career She represented Canada at the 1980, 1984 and 1988 Winter Olympics. She won six World Cup victories and three National Downhill titles in her eleven years on the National Ski Team. She was the first North American woman to win a World Cup Super Giant Slalom skiing. Jana Gantnerová-Šoltýsová (born 30 September 1959 in Kežmarok) is a Slovak former alpine skier who competed for Czechoslovakia in the 1976 Winter Olympics, 1980 Winter Olympics, and 1984 Winter Olympics. Bjelašnica
Bjelašnica ( sr-cyrl, Бјелашница, ) is a mountain in central Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is to the southwest of Sarajevo, bordering Mount Igman. Bjelašnica's tallest peak, by which the mountain group got its name, rises to an elevation of . Other notable peaks are Krvavac (), Mali Vlahinja (), and Hranisava (). The Bjelašnica range is bordered by the Rakitnica in the south, the Neretva in the west, Mount Igman in the north-east and Mount Ivan in the north-west. Only at 20 minutes distance of Sarajevo, it is a tourist attraction for hiking and skiing. Bjelašnica was, in certain areas, the site of extensive combat during the 1992–95 Siege of Sarajevo and particular areas pose a high mine risk.
