The Women's giant slalom competition of the Innsbruck 1976 Olympics was held at Axamer Lizum on Friday, 13 February. The defending world champion was Fabienne Serrat of France, while Austria's Annemarie Moser-Pröll was the defending World Cup giant slalom champion and Switzerland's Lise-Marie Morerod led the 1976 World Cup. Alpine Skiing
Alpine skiing, or downhill skiing, is the pastime of sliding down snow-covered slopes on skis with fixed-heel bindings, unlike other types of skiing ( cross-country, Telemark, or ski jumping), which use skis with free-heel bindings. Whether for recreation or for sport, it is typically practiced at ski resorts, which provide such services as ski lifts, artificial snow making, snow grooming, restaurants, and ski patrol. "Off-piste" skiers—those skiing outside ski area boundaries—may employ snowmobiles, helicopters or snowcats to deliver them to the top of a slope. Back-country skiers may use specialized equipment with a free-heel mode, including 'sticky' skins on the bottoms of the skis to stop them sliding backwards during an ascent, then locking the heel and removing the skins for their descent. Marie-Theres Nadig (born 8 March 1954) is a retired Swiss alpine skier. Biography Aged 17, she won gold medals in the downhill and giant slalom events at the 1972 Winter Olympics. During her career, Nadig won 24 world cup races and had 57 podium finishes. At the 1980 Winter Olympics, she was third in the downhill event. After retiring from competitions, between 1999 and 2005 she worked as a national coach. Career Nadig won her first major competition in 1970, the giant slalom at the Swiss Junior Championships. She finished sixth in the downhill at the world cup in 1971, and second in 1972. Brigitte Totschnig
Brigitte Totschnig (later ''Habersatter'', born 30 August 1954) is a retired Austrian alpine skiing, alpine skier. Career She competed at the 1972 and 1976 Winter Olympics and won a silver medal in the downhill in 1976. Totschnig finished seventh in the downhill at the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 1978. Between 1975 and 1977 she had seven victories and 13 podiums at the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup, World Cup, 11 of them in downhill; her best overall placement was fourth in the 1976–77 season. She retired after the 1977–1978 season, in which she won national titles in the downhill and combined. In 1978 she built the Aparthotel Olympia in Filzmoos and ran it since then. Irene Epple-Waigel (; born 18 June 1957) is a German former alpine skier. She won a total of 11 Alpine Skiing World Cup races and two World Cups, in giant slalom and combined (both in 1982). She also won a silver medal at the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in giant slalom. In the 1978 FIS Alpine Skiing World Championships at Garmisch-Partenkirchen she won the silver medal in the downhill. On 9 January 1983 she won the first women's World Cup Super-G race, held in Verbier. Linda Lorraine "Lindy" Cochran Kelley (born July 10, 1953) is a former World Cup alpine ski racer from the United States. Cochran is the youngest of four siblings of the "Skiing Cochrans" family of Richmond, Vermont, whose parents built and operated a ski hill in their back yard. Named to the U.S. Ski Team in 1970, Cochran competed in the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck and finished sixth in the slalom and 12th in the giant slalom. She finished 14th in slalom at the World Championships in 1974 at St. Moritz, Switzerland.
