Alpine Lake
Alpine lakes are classified as lakes at high altitudes in mountainous zones, usually near or above the tree line, with extended periods of ice cover. These lakes are commonly formed from glacial activity (either current or in the past) but can also be formed from geological processes such as volcanic activity or landslides. Many alpine lakes that are fed from glacial melt have the characteristic bright turquoise or green color as a result of glacial flour, suspended minerals derived from a glacier scouring the bedrock. When active glaciers are not supplying water to the lake, such as a majority of alpine lakes of the Rocky Mountains in the U.S., the lakes may still be bright blue due to the lack of algae growth resulting from cold temperatures, lack of nutrient run-off from surrounding land, and lack of sediment input. Alpine Lake (Central Sawtooth Wilderness)
Alpine Lake is an alpine lake in Custer County, Idaho, United States, located high in the Sawtooth Mountains in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. The lake is approximately southwest of Stanley. A trail from the Redfish Lake Creek trailhead and campground at the southwestern end of Redfish Lake lead about along Redfish Creek to an intersection with a trail that leads up to Alpine Lake. The Redfish Lake trailhead can be accessed from State Highway 75 via Sawtooth National Forest road 214. The surface elevation of the lake is 6,513 feet (1,985 m) above sea level. To reach the Redfish Creek trailhead you can either hike around either side of Redfish Lake or take a boat across and save several miles of hiking. With a surface elevation of above sea level, Alpine Lake can remain frozen into early summer. At the southwestern end of the lake is Packrat Peak at in elevation. Alpine Lake (Northern Sawtooth Wilderness)
Alpine Lake is an alpine lake in Custer County, Idaho, United States, located high in the Sawtooth Range (Idaho), Sawtooth Mountains in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. The lake is approximately southwest of Stanley, Idaho, Stanley. A trail from the Iron Creek trailhead and campground leads approximately to Sawtooth Lake. The Iron Creek trailhead can be accessed from Idaho State Highway 21, State Highway 21 via Sawtooth National Forest road 619. There is another lake with the name Alpine Lake (Central Sawtooth Wilderness), Alpine Lake in the central part of the Sawtooth Wilderness. With a surface elevation of 7,828 feet (2,386 m) Sea level#AMSL, above sea level, Alpine Lake can remain frozen into early summer. At the south end of Alpine Lake is Alpine Peak (Idaho), Alpine Peak at 9,861 feet (3,006 m) above sea level.
