Alphonsus Cassell
Alphonsus Celestine Edmund Cassell MBE (16 November 1949 – 15 September 2010) was a Montserratian calypso and soca musician, regarded as the first superstar of soca from Montserrat.Thompson, Dave (2002) "Reggae & Caribbean Music", Backbeat Books, , pp. 26–28 He performed under the stage name Arrow. Internationally, his biggest hit song was " Hot Hot Hot" (1982), known from the original by Arrow and numerous later versions by other musicians. Early years Cassell first performed at the age of 10 in a concert at the Montserrat Secondary School. He began singing calypso in 1967 and took the ''Junior Monarch'' title that year. Cassell took up singing professionally in 1969. That year he was runner up in the ''Montserrat Calypso King'' competition. He won the title the following year, following in the footsteps of his brothers Justin (known as Hero) and Lorenzo (known as Young Challenger). He took the title a total of four times. Montserrat
Montserrat ( ) is a British Overseas Territories, British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean. It is part of the Leeward Islands, the northern portion of the Lesser Antilles chain of the West Indies. Montserrat is about long and wide, with roughly of coastline. It is nicknamed "The Emerald Isle of the Caribbean" both for its resemblance to coastal Ireland and for the Irish diaspora, Irish ancestry of many of its inhabitants. Montserrat is the only non-fully sovereign full member of the Caribbean Community and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States. Laxmichand "Babla" Virji Shah and Kumari Kanchan Dinkarrao Mali-Shah were an Indian husband-wife musical group best known for work in the chutney music and Desi Folk music genres. They performed together for forty years until Kanchan died in 2004. Babla Shah is the younger brother of famous music director duo Kalyanji Anandji. Biography Babla was born as Laxmichand Virji Shah, son of Virji Shah, into a Kutchi Hindu family of trading background. His family hailed from the village of Kundrodi in Kutch, Gujarat. His father had moved to Mumbai and set up a shop in Girgaum. The music director duo of Kalyanji and Anandji are Babla's elder brothers. ''Knock Dem Dead'' is an album by the Montserratian soca musician Arrow, released in 1988. It was Arrow's first album to be widely distributed in the United States. The song "Groove Master" appears on the soundtracks to '' Casual Sex?'' and '' The Mighty Quinn''. Production The album was produced by Leston Paul. Lescott Kevin Lyttle Coombs (born 14 September 1976) is a Vincentian soca artist, who had a worldwide hit with " Turn Me On" in 2003, recorded with the dancehall artist Spragga Benz. Career Lyttle was encouraged by his family to pursue music at the young age and has been performing at local events in his teens. Prior to his musical career, Lyttle had subsisted on day jobs, such as customs officer and radio disc jockey. Investing his savings of EC$1,500, Lyttle recorded " Turn Me On" as a soca ballad in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in 2001, and the song subsequently became a radio hit throughout the Caribbean. Lyttle signed with Atlantic Records in 2003 and a remixed version of "Turn Me On" was officially released as a single in the UK at the end of the year, with dancehall pop artist Spragga Benz's guest vocals.
