Alofi is the capital of the Pacific Ocean island nation of Niue. Niue International Airport
Niue International Airport , also known as Hanan International Airport, is an international airport serving the island nation of Niue. It is located near the town of Alofi, and is only used by Air New Zealand, flying to and from Auckland twice a week, departing Auckland on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and departing Niue on Mondays and Fridays. Plans for an airfield on Niue were initially proposed in 1947, but were not advanced. In 1964 the Niue Assembly asked the New Zealand government to construct an airport, and a site was surveyed. Originally an emergency airfield was planned, but following the survey the plans were upgraded to a full airfield capable of handling turboprop airliners. Construction would be carried out by the New Zealand Army. Construction began in 1968, with New Zealand Ministry of Works staff overseeing Niuean workers from the Department of Public Works. Cyclone Heta
Severe Tropical Cyclone Heta was a Category 5 tropical cyclone that caused moderate damage to the islands of Tonga, Niue, and American Samoa during late December 2003 and early January 2004. Heta formed on December 25, 2003; it reached a maximum intensity of 260 km/h (160 mph) and an estimated pressure of 915 hPa (27.02 inHg) before dissipating on January 11, 2004. It was the first named tropical cyclone to form during the 2003–04 South Pacific cyclone season. Avatele
Avatele, formerly known as Oneonepata Matavaihala, is one of the fourteen villages of Niue, located on the southwest coast, with a population of 143 residents as of 2017. Geography Avatele Beach, the village's main sea track, stretches along the coast of Avatele Bay and is the largest and most well-known beach on the island. Although the sand is mostly of the coarse kind it is an important swimming and picnic site for both tourists and residents.
