Alma Park Zoo was a zoo located north of Brisbane, Australia, in Dakabin on Alma Road. The park was filled with Australian and exotic species. Alma Park Zoo was the oldest zoo in Queensland when it closed in 2014. The zoo was owned by Bill Williams who also owned a business called WW Shock Absorbers, but was built by workers, led by Leroy Pidgeon, who lived with his family in the caretakers cottage in the zoo at the time. Leroy also recovered, transported and replanted many of the mature palm trees that were a statement of the zoo. These came from older farm blocks around Brisbane that were being sub divided in the early 1970s period and Bill Williams had struck deals to acquire them. The zoo closed on 31 March 2014 and many of the animals were transferred to Wildlife HQ Zoo. There were plans for the zoo to open in Logan; however, this plan was cancelled in May 2015. Dakabin is a locality in the Moreton Bay Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Dakabin had a population of 3,540 people. Geography The western boundary is aligned with the North Coast railway line while the eastern boundary follows the Bruce Highway. History The origin of the suburb name is from the Yugarabul Indigenous Australian language meaning grass tree or grass root. Alma Park Zoo opened in 1969. it was a park which contained Australian and exotic species as well as tropical gardens. It was proposed to relocate the zoo to Logan City in 2011, but on 31 March 2014 the zoo relocated to The Big Pineapple. Dakabin State High School opened on 23 January 1978. Northpine Christian College opened in Dakabin on 1 March 1978. The school originally opened in Zillmere in 1953, but the school building was destroyed in a fire in February 1978, resulting in its relocation to Dakabin.
