Alma is a town in Buffalo County in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 297 at the 2010 census. The city of Alma is located along the western town line. The unincorporated community of Tell is located in the town. Geography Alma is located west of the center of Buffalo County and is bordered to its west by the city of Alma, which lies along the Mississippi River. The Buffalo River flows across the town from the northern to the western border. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and , or 1.22%, is water. Buffalo County is a county located in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, the population was 13,317. Its county seat is Alma. The county was created in 1853 and organized the following year. History Buffalo County, founded in 1853, is named for the Buffalo River, which flows from Strum to Alma, where it empties into the Mississippi River. The Buffalo River obtained its name from the French voyager Father Louis Hennepin, who named it ''Riviere des Boeufs'' in 1680. The first permanent settlement was established in 1839, located in what is now Fountain City. This settlement was originally named Holmes' Landing after a family who traded with the Sioux and Chippewa. Edmund Hitt
Edmund Hitt (February 9, 1901 – July 17, 1976) was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly. Biography Hitt was born in the town of Alma, Buffalo County, Wisconsin, and was the younger brother of the politician Arthur A. Hitt. He attended the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Hitt was a farmer and farm labor investigator. He was also involved with the Tenney Telephone Company. He died on July 17, 1976, in Wabasha, Minnesota. Career Hitt was chairman of the Town of Alma from 1936 to 1943 and mayor of the city of Alma from 1946 to 1948.
