Allen Wheeler
Air Commodore Allen Henry Wheeler (27 September 1903 – 1 January 1984) was a Royal Air Force officer and pilot who served during the Second World War. He was later trustee of the Shuttleworth Trust, a collection of vintage cars and aircraft. Early life Wheeler was born on 27 September 1903 in the village of Bitterley near Ludlow, Shropshire. He was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge and then commissioned as a Pilot Officer in the Royal Air Force in 1925 where he trained as an engineer and pilot. Royal Air Force Between 1941 and 1943 he commanded the Performance Testing Squadron at RAF Boscombe Down and the Experimental Flying Department at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, (RAE), Farnborough. He took the opportunity to fly a number of captured Germany aircraft including the Focke-Wulf 190 and while at the RAF was one of the few pilots to fly the first British jet aircraft the Gloster E.28/39. Bitterley
Bitterley is a village and civil parish in Shropshire, England. According to the 2001 census the parish had a population of 802, increasing to 902 at the 2011 Census. The village is about east of Ludlow on the western slopes of Titterstone Clee Hill. Bitterley is the location for Bitterley Court about east of the modern village. Nearby to the east, is the small hamlet of Bedlam. History Bitterley is listed in the ''Domesday Book'' of 1086 when it was known as ''Buterlei''. The ''fictional'' village of Bitterley in the Mary Webb novel ''The Golden Arrow'' (published 1916) was based on Habberley in the same county. Operation Market Garden was an Allies of World War II, Allied military operation during the World War II, Second World War fought in the Netherlands from 17 to 27 September 1944. Silyn Roberts
Robert "Silyn" Roberts (28 March 1871 – 15 August 1930) was a Welsh clergyman, writer, teacher and pacifist. History Roberts, a Calvinistic Methodist minister, was a noted Welsh-language poet, the winner of the Crown at the 1902 National Eisteddfod of Wales with his poem "Trystan ac Esyllt". Born in Bryn Llidiart, Llanllyfni, Caernarfonshire, he had worked as a slate quarryman before attending the University College of North Wales, Bangor, and Bala Theological College. From 1901 until 1912 he was a Calvinistic Methodist minister, firstly in Lewisham, London, and then in Tanygrisiau, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Merionethshire. While living in London in the early 1900s Roberts met and befriended Vladimir Lenin. A Socialist and a close associate of the academic and politician W. J. Captain Eric Melrose "Winkle" Brown, CBE, DSC, AFC, Hon FRAeS, RN (21 January 1919 – 21 February 2016) was a British Royal Navy officer and test pilot who flew 487 types of aircraft, more than anyone else in history. Brown holds the world record for the most aircraft carrier deck take-offs and landings performed (2,407 and 2,271 respectively) and achieved several "firsts" in naval aviation, including the first landings on an aircraft carrier of a twin-engined aircraft, an aircraft with a tricycle undercarriage, a jet aircraft, and a rotary-wing aircraft. He flew almost every category of Royal Navy and Royal Air Force aircraft: glider, fighter, bomber, airliner, amphibian, flying boat and helicopter.
