Alice Buffett
Alice Inez Buffett is a political figure and linguist from the Australian territory of Norfolk Island. Political role In 1981 Alice Buffett stood for and was elected to serve as a member of the Norfolk Legislative Assembly. Buffett was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australian in the 1998 Australia Day Honours for "service to the Norfolk Island community, particularly as a member of the Legislative Assembly advocating initiatives to improve health care facilities and social infrastructure". Linguist Alice Buffett is also a noted linguist. She is the author of "''Speak Norfuk Today''", widely recognised as the most complete resource on the Norfuk language in existence; this work was prepared with the collaboration of the late Dr. Donald Laycock of the Australian National University. Norfolk Island
Norfolk Island (, ; Norfuk: ''Norf'k Ailen'') is an external territory of Australia located in the Pacific Ocean between New Zealand and New Caledonia, directly east of Australia's Evans Head and about from Lord Howe Island. Norfolk Legislative Assembly
The Norfolk Island Legislative Assembly was the prime legislature, legislative body of Norfolk Island from 1979 to 2015. Formed after the Norfolk Island Act 1979 was passed in the Australian parliament, its first members were elected on 10 August 1979. The last assembly was the 14th, elected on 13 March 2013. On 17 June 2015, the Australian government abolished the assembly, ending self-government on the island. Norfolk Island Regional Council, a local government body instituted under New South Wales law and with significantly-restricted powers, was established in July 2016 to perform local-level governance on the island. Norfuk Language
Norfuk ( pih, Norfuk) (increasingly spelt Norfolk) or Norf'k is the language spoken on Norfolk Island (in the Pacific Ocean) by the local residents. It is a blend of 18th-century English and Tahitian, originally introduced by Pitkern-speaking settlers from the Pitcairn Islands. Along with English, it is the co-official language of Norfolk Island. Donald Laycock
Donald Laycock (1936–1988) was an Australian linguist and anthropologist. He is best remembered for his work on the languages of Papua New Guinea. Biography He was a graduate of University of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia and later worked as a researcher at the University of Adelaide in Anthropology. Pitkern
Pitkern, also known as Pitcairn-Norfolk or Pitcairnese, is a language spoken on Pitcairn and Norfolk islands. It is a mixture of English and Tahitian, and has been given many classifications by scholars, including cant, patois, and Atlantic Creole. Although spoken on Pacific Ocean islands, it has been described as an Atlantic Creole due to the lack of connections with other English-based creoles of the Pacific. There are fewer than 50 speakers on Pitcairn Island, a number which has been steadily decreasing since 1971.
