Alfred Beni
Alfred Beni (3 June 1923 — 4 June 1995) was an Austrian chess International Master (IM) (1951). Biography Alfred Beni was two-time silver medalist Austrian Chess Championship (1947, 1952). In 1957, he represented Austria in the Zonal Chess tournament. Alfred Beni consisted of Vienna chess clubs: ''Schachklub Sandleiten'' (until 1941), ''Schachklub Hietzing Wien'' (1941-1945 and 1948-1977), ''Schachklub Ing. Georg Weisel'' (1945–1948), ''Schachklub Donaustadt'' (1977–1995; including as President). David Bronstein
David Ionovich Bronstein (russian: Дави́д Ио́нович Бронште́йн; February 19, 1924 – December 5, 2006) was a Soviet and Ukrainian chess player. Awarded the title of International Grandmaster by FIDE in 1950, he narrowly missed becoming World Chess Champion in 1951. Bronstein was one of the world's strongest players from the mid-1940s into the mid-1970s, and was described by his peers as a creative genius and master of tactics. Also a renowned chess writer, his book ''Zurich International Chess Tournament 1953'' is widely considered one of the greatest chess books ever written. The Clare Benedict Cup was a chess tournament for national teams from Western and Northern Europe, which took place 23 times from 1953 to 1979. Overview and History Foundation Clare Benedict (1871–1961), author and patron, was originally from Cleveland, Ohio, but moved to Switzerland in 1945, where she founded the tournament. She was a distant relative of author James Fenimore Cooper. The European Team Championship (often abbreviated in texts and games databases as ''ETC'') is an international team chess event, eligible for the participation of European nations whose chess federations are located in zones 1.1 to 1.9.
