Alexandre Joseph Désiré Bivort
Alexandre Joseph Désiré Bivort (1809–1872) was a Belgian horticulturalist, specialising in pomology. He was particularly influential in systematising the nomenclature of strains of pear. Life Bivort was born at Fleurus on 9 March 1809. Pomology (from Latin , “fruit,” + ) is a branch of botany that studies fruit and its cultivation. The term fruticulture—introduced from Romance languages (all of whose incarnations of the term descend from Latin and )—is also used. Fleurus (; wa, Fleuru) is a city and municipality of Wallonia located in the province of Hainaut, Belgium. It has been the site of four major battles. Melle () is a municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises the villages of and Melle proper. On 1 January 2018 Melle had a total population of 11,574. The total area is 15.21 km² which gives a population density of 761 inhabitants per km². Melle was mentioned in documents in 830, although the archeological findings prove the region was inhabited long before that date. Jean-Baptiste Van Mons
Jean-Baptiste Van Mons (11 November 1765 Brussels — 6 September 1842 Leuven) was a Belgian physicist, chemist, botanist, horticulturist and pomologist, and professor of chemistry and agronomy at Louvain (1817-1830). Van Mons carried out the first recorded selective breeding of the European Pear through cycles of seed propagation. He was the most prolific pear breeder known, producing no fewer than 40 superior varieties over a 60-year period, including Bosc and D'Anjou pears. Van Mons readily shared his observations and plants, and developed effective ways of exporting cuttings and seedlings as far away as the United States. After his death his seed collection was acquired by Alexandre Bivort. The French and Belgians were fanatical about pears, and spent an inordinate amount of time developing new varieties of pear with a buttery taste in the 18th century.
