Alexander Hunter
Dr Alexander Hunter (1729–17 May 1809) was a Scottish physician, known also as a writer and editor. Life Born in Edinburgh in 1729 (the ''Memoir'' says 1733), he was eldest son of a prosperous druggist. He was sent to the grammar school at the age of 10, and from the age of 15 until 21 attended the University of Edinburgh, studying medicine in the last three years. He spent the next year or two studying in London, in Rouen (under Le Cat), and in Paris (under Petit), and on his return to Edinburgh received his doctorate (MD) in 1753 (thesis, 'De Cantharidibus'). After practising for a few months at Gainsborough, and a few years at Beverley, he was invited to York in 1763, on the death of Dr Perrot, and continued to practise there until his death in 1809. In 1772 Hunter set to work to establish the York Lunatic Asylum. The building was finished in 1777, and Hunter was physician to it for many years. Alexander Hunter (planter)
Alexander Hunter (born 1750 in Bedford County, Virginia- died 1804 in Henry County, Virginia) was a noted 18th century tobacco planter in Southwestern Virginia, and supplier to the American Revolutionary Army. His home, "Hunter's Place", was along the Smith River (Virginia) in Henry County. Personal life Alexander Hunter was the son of Alexander Hunter, Sr., (died before March 22, 1768, in Bedford County, Virginia) and Elizabeth (Steele) Hunter. His siblings mentioned in his father's will were: James, John, Samuel, Betty, and Alice Hays (and perhaps "Al ?Wilson" added later - order of births unspecified). Alexander Hunter married Martha Patsy Hairston (June 6, 1753- June 3, 1832), daughter of Robert Hairston and Ruth Stovall Hairston, on June 3, 1769. Alexander Hunter (novelist)
Alexander Hunter (1843- June 30, 1914) was an American soldier for the Confederate States Army, civil servant, and writer best known for the novels ''Johnny Reb and Billy Yank'' and '' The Women of the Debatable Land''. Early life Alexander Hunter was born in 1843 and was a member of the Hunter family. He was the son of Bushrod Hunter and Mary Frances Blow. He lived during his youth at the Abingdon plantation in present-day Arlington County, Virginia and studied at private schools until the start of the American Civil War in 1861. Civil War Alexander Hunter became a private in the Confederate Army where he served in Company A of the 17th Virginia Infantry for the first two years of the war. Hunter was captured in 1862 but was exchanged in time to fight at Antietam. He was paroled soon after being captured again on September 17, 1862 at Antietam and went on to participate in the Battle of Chancellorsville. Alexander Hunter (politician)
Alexander Hunter was a unionist politician in Northern Ireland. Hunter studied at the Belfast Royal Academy and Stranmillis Training College, then at Trinity College, Dublin, and Queen's University Belfast, before becoming a teacher. He became active in the Ulster Unionist Party and was elected for Carrick, unopposed, in a by-election in 1950. He served until 1965, when he retired. Alexander Hunter (Madras Surgeon)
Alexander Hunter (19 May 1816 – 7 May 1890) was a surgeon in the East India Company's Madras Army who was also a skilled and trained artist. In 1850 he founded the Madras School of Art, the first school of art and design in India, which was taken over by the government in 1855. He was a pioneer of photography in India, introduced courses at the art school, and founded the Madras Photographic Society. He was also a collector of geological specimens, a naturalist with interests in economic products, and a key organizer of the Madras Exhibitions of 1855 and 1857. Biography Hunter was born in Chittagong, the son of Richard Hunter who worked in the East India Company Civil Services in Bengal and his wife Margaret, daughter of Alexander Walker who had served as a surgeon in Bengal. Alex Hunter (economist)
Alexander Hunter (23 December 1919 – 21 May 1971) was a Scottish-Australian industrial economist. He arrived in Australia in 1958 after being appointed a senior lecturer at the University of Melbourne. He then gained prominence as the editor of ''The Economics of Australian Industry''. He became a professor of economics at the University of New South Wales in 1961, then moving to the Australian National University in 1965. He was a member of the editorial board of the ''Bulletin of Indonesian Economic Studies''. He was married to Thelma Anna Carmela Cibelli and had three children. Hunter died of a coronary occlusion during a visit to Lae, Papua New Guinea, and was cremated.
