Alexander G. McNutt
Alexander Gallatin McNutt (January 3, 1802 – October 22, 1848) was a Mississippi attorney and politician who served as Governor from 1838 to 1842. Early life Alexander G. McNutt was born into an aristocratic landowning family in Rockbridge County, Virginia on January 3, 1802. He graduated from Washington College (now Washington and Lee University) in 1821, studied law, and moved to Jackson, Mississippi in the early 1820s. He subsequently relocated to Vicksburg, where he practiced in partnership with Joel Cameron. When Cameron was murdered by his slaves in 1833, McNutt subsequently married Cameron's widow, Elizabeth Lewis Cameron. (Before the slaves were executed, a free black man who was also implicated blamed McNutt for the murder, stating that McNutt had instigated it in order to profit by Cameron's death.) Lewis Cass
Lewis Cass (October 9, 1782June 17, 1866) was an American military officer, politician, and statesman. He represented Michigan in the United States Senate and served in the Cabinets of two U.S. Presidents, Andrew Jackson and James Buchanan. He was also the 1848 Democratic presidential nominee. A slaveowner himself, he was a leading spokesman for the Doctrine of Popular Sovereignty, which held that the people in each territory should decide whether to permit slavery. Born in Exeter, New Hampshire, he attended Phillips Exeter Academy before establishing a legal practice in Zanesville, Ohio. After serving in the Ohio House of Representatives, he was appointed as a U.S. Marshal. Cass also joined the Freemasons and would eventually co-found the Grand Lodge of Michigan. Hiram Runnels
Hiram George Runnels (December 15, 1796 — December 17, 1857) was a U.S. politician from the states of Mississippi and Texas. He was a Democrat who served as the ninth governor of Mississippi from November 20, 1833, to December 3, 1835. Biography Tunnels was born in Hancock County, Georgia, on December 15, 1796, to Harmon M. and Hester (Hubert) Runnels. A poor frontier family, the Runnels relocated to Mississippi when Hiram was a child. The Runnels were the first white people to build a house in what would become Monticello, Mississippi. He married Obedience Smith in 1823. Although he received a limited education, Runnels worked as a schoolteacher before serving as the state’s auditor and treasurer from 1822 to 1830. Runnels also served as a volunteer in the army during various conflicts with Native Americans. He was elected to in the Mississippi House of Representatives in 1830. McNutt, Mississippi
McNutt is an unincorporated community located in Leflore County, Mississippi. McNutt is located west of Schlater, just off Mississippi Highway 442. It is part of the Greenwood, Mississippi micropolitan area. History McNutt was named for McNutt Lake, which was in turn named for Alexander McNutt, the Governor of Mississippi from 1838 to 1842. McNutt served as the first county seat of Sunflower County when the county was formed in 1844. The first courthouse was a log cabin, which was eventually replaced by a brick building. When Leflore County was formed in 1871 from portions of Carroll, Sunflower and Tallahatchie counties, the courthouse records and building became property of the new county. After Greenwood became the county seat of Leflore County, the former county buildings in McNutt were sold and became private property.
