Alex Jürgen
Alex Jürgen (born September 7, 1976) is an Austrian intersex activist. Jürgen was the first person in Austria to receive a birth certificate and passport with legal recognition of non-binary gender after having fought for it in court. Life Alex Jürgen was born intersex in a hospital in Steyr and was assigned male at birth by the doctors. His parents gave him the name Jürgen. Two years later, doctors advised his parents to socialize him as a girl from then on because of an underdevelopment of his male sex characteristics. His first name was changed to Alexandra, through a medical intervention his penis and his inner testicles were removed. Elisabeth Scharang shot a documentary film about him and his fight for recognition of intersexual people in Austria. The film was released in 2006 as ''Tintenfischalarm'' and had its premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival. The European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR; formally the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms) is an international convention to protect human rights and political freedoms in Europe. Non-binary and genderqueer are umbrella terms for gender identities that are not solely male or femaleidentities that are outside the gender binary. The Constitutional Court (german: Verfassungsgerichtshof or ) in Austria is the tribunal responsible for judicial review. It verifies the constitutionality of statutes, the legality of ordinances and other secondary legislation, and the constitutionality of decisions of certain other courts. The Court also decides over demarcation conflicts between courts, between courts and the public administration, and between federal and state bodies. Steyr
Steyr (; Central Bavarian: ''Steia'') is a statutory city, located in the Austrian federal state of Upper Austria. It is the administrative capital, though not part of Steyr-Land District. Steyr is Austria's 12th most populated town and the 3rd largest city in Upper Austria. Helmut Graupner
Helmut Graupner is a lawyer in Vienna, considered a leading advocate in LGBT European rights. He has been president of the Rechtskomitee Lambda since its foundation in 1991. From 2005, he has been the Austrian representative on the European Commission on Sexual Orientation Law (ECSOL). In 2016, Graupner was awarded the Decoration of Merit, the highest honor awarded by the state of Vienna. In 2017, Graupner pursued a case for the rights of five same-sex families that resulted in Austria's highest court ruling that banning same-sex couples from marriage was discriminatory. The first same-sex marriage in Austria was for Graupner's clients in December 2018, with same-sex marriage available to the general public at the start of 2019.
