Aleksey Mitrofanov
Aleksey Valentinovich Mitrofanov (russian: Алексе́й Валенти́нович Митрофа́нов, also transliterated as Alexei Mitrofanov; born 16 March 1962) is a Russian politician and deputy of the State Duma of Russia from the A Just Russia party. He has been Deputy Chairman of the State Duma's Committee on Credit Organizations and Financial Markets and a member of the LDPR Supreme Council. Career Mitrofanov ran for mayor of Moscow in 1999 and again in 2003, unsuccessfully both times. He served in the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Soviet Union. He holds degrees in international relations from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations and from the USA-Canada Institute of the Soviet Academy of Sciences. Elena Sergeevna Katina (russian: link=no, Елена Сергеевна Катина; born 4 October 1984), better known as Lena Katina, is a Russian musician who gained fame as one half of the pop/electronica duo t.A.T.u. She started her career at the age of eight, joining the Russian children's act Avenue, soon after that joining Neposedy. In 1999, producer Ivan Shapovalov chose Katina and Julia Volkova for his project t.A.T.u. The duo would later become Russia's most successful pop music act. 2007 Russian Legislative Election
Legislative elections were held in Russia on 2 December 2007. At stake were the 450 seats in the 5th State Duma, the lower house of the Federal Assembly (the legislature). Eleven parties were included in the ballot, including Russia's largest party, United Russia, which was supported by President of Russia Vladimir Putin. Official results showed that United Russia won 64.3% of the votes, the Communist Party of the Russian Federation 11.6%, the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia 8.1%, and Fair Russia won 7.7%, and none of the other parties won enough votes to gain any seats. Although 400 foreign election monitors were present at the polling stations, the elections received mixed criticism internationally, largely from Western countries, and by some independent media and some opposition parties domestically. A duma (russian: дума) is a Russian assembly with advisory or legislative functions. The term ''boyar duma'' is used to refer to advisory councils in Russia from the 10th to 17th centuries. Starting in the 18th century, city dumas were formed across Russia. The first formally constituted state duma was the Imperial State Duma introduced to the Russian Empire by Emperor Nicholas II in 1905. The Emperor retained an absolute veto and could dismiss the State Duma at any time for a suitable reason.
