Aleksandr Shirshov
Aleksandr Shirshov (russian: Александр Сергеевич Ширшов; born 25 August 1972) is a Russian former sabre fencer. He was born in Moscow, and was a member of CSKA Moscow. He won a gold medal in the team sabre event at the 1992 Summer Olympics as part of the Unified Team, and came in 13th in the individual sabre. He is now a fencing coach. 2013 world team champion Kamil Ibragimov and four-time junior world champion Konstantin Lokhanov have been his pupils. He is married to two-time Olympic team épée champion Oksana Yermakova. The Russian Fencing Federation (russian: Федерация Фехтования России (ФФР), translit=Federatsiya Fekhtovaniya Rossii (FFR); french: Fédération d'escrime de la Russie) is the governing body for the sport of fencing in Russia. It was created proper in 1992, but its previous incarnation was affiliated to the Fédération Internationale d'Escrime (FIE) in 1914. The sabre (US English: ''saber'', both pronounced ) is one of the three disciplines of modern fencing. The sabre weapon is for thrusting and cutting with both the cutting edge and the back of the blade (unlike other modern fencing weapons, the épée and foil, where the methods of making a hit are scored using only the point of the blade).
