Aldrovandi Villa Borghese is a luxury 5-star hotel at the edge of Villa Borghese in Rome, Italy. A member of The Leading Hotels of the World. It is also adjacent to Bioparco, a zoological garden located on part of the original Villa Borghese estate. History Prior to becoming a hotel, this late 19th century Umbertine palace hosted the ''Istituto Cabrini'', a prestigious young ladies' college operated by the Sœurs missionnaires du Sacré-Cœur, and attended by pupils mainly from the aristocracy. The hotel name is a combination of the street name Via Ulisse Aldrovandi - in honour of the Italian naturalist Ulisse Aldrovandi - and the name of the adjacent Villa Borghese gardens. Villa Borghese or Villa Borghese Pinciana ('Borghese family{{!Borghese villa on the Pincian Hill') is the villa built by the architect Flaminio Ponzio (and, after his death, finished by his assistant Giovanni Vasanzio), developing sketches by Scipione Borghese. Bioparco di Roma is a zoological garden located on part of the original Villa Borghese estate in Rome, Italy. There are 1,114 animals of 222 species maintained. History The zoo was conceived in 1908 to hold exotic animal species for exhibition. Unlike other zoos at the time which mainly worked for scientific criteria, this zoo was designed for the entertainment and amusement of the people. The zoo covered and was erected in the northern part of the Villa Borghese estate; it was opened on 5 January 1911. The zoo was designed by Carl Hagenbeck, who had already opened a zoo in Hamburg Stellingen. The park was built in the style of that in Hamburg: ditches and pits instead of bars, and generous green spaces. This initial success did not hold. Ulisse Aldrovandi (11 September 1522 – 4 May 1605) was an Italian naturalist, the moving force behind Bologna's botanical garden, one of the first in Europe. Carl Linnaeus and the comte de Buffon reckoned him the father of natural history studies. He is usually referred to, especially in older scientific literature in Latin, as Aldrovandus; his name in Italian is equally given as Aldroandi. Life Aldrovandi was born in Bologna to Teseo Aldrovandi and his wife, a noble but poor family. His father was a lawyer, and Secretary to the Senate of Bologna, but died when Ulisse was seven years old. His widowed mother wanted him to become a jurist.
