Alberto I Della Scala
Alberto I della Scala (died 3 September 1301) was lord of Verona from 1277, a member of the Scaliger family. The son of Jacopino della Scala, he was ''podestà'' of Mantua in 1272 and 1275. In 1277, after the assassination of his brother Mastino I della Scala, Mastino, he inherited the seigniory of Verona. Alberto died in Verona in 1301. His son Bartolomeo I della Scala, Bartolomeo succeeded him. His other sons Alboino I della Scala, Alboino and Cangrande I della Scala, Francesco (Cangrande) were also lord of Verona from 1304 and 1312, respectively. His daughter Costanza married Obizzo II d'Este, Marquis of Ferrara, as his second wife. The Della Scala family, whose members were known as Scaligeri () or Scaligers (; from the Latinized ''de Scalis''), was the ruling family of Verona and mainland Veneto (except for Venice) from 1262 to 1387, for a total of 125 years. History When Ezzelino III was elected ''podestà'' of the commune in 1226, he was able to convert the office into a permanent lordship. Cangrande I Della Scala
Cangrande (christened Can Francesco) della Scala (9 March 1291 – 22 July 1329) was an Italian nobleman, belonging to the della Scala family which ruled Verona from 1308 until 1387. Now perhaps best known as the leading patron of the poet Dante Alighieri, Cangrande was in his own day chiefly acclaimed as a successful warrior and autocrat. Between becoming sole ruler of Verona in 1311 and his death in 1329 he took control of several neighbouring cities, notably Vicenza, Padua and Treviso, and came to be regarded as the leader of the Ghibelline faction in northern Italy. The Lords of Verona ruled the city from 1260 until 19 October 1387 and for ten days in 1404. Obizzo II D'Este, Marquis Of Ferrara
Obizzo II d'Este (c. 1247 – 13 February 1293) was Marquis of Ferrara and Ancona. Biography He was a bastard, the illegitimate son of Rinaldo I d'Este – the only son and heir of the Margrave Azzo VII d'Este – and a Neapolitan laundress. Soon after his birth, Obizzo was expelled from Ferrara with his mother and settled in Ravenna. For his birth, Obizzo was destined to an obscure future; nevertheless. This situation changed in 1251 when his father Rinaldo, a hostage of emperor Frederick II since 1238, was poisoned with his barren wife, Adelaide da Romano. Without any other sons to continue his line, the Margrave Azzo VII saw in Obizzo the only chance of survival of the House of Este and fought for his recognition as his heir.
