Albatross Golf Club
Albatross Golf Club is a golf club located 9 km north of central Gothenburg, Sweden. It has hosted the Volvo International Tournament on the Ladies European Tour. History The club was admitted to the Swedish Golf Federation in 1974 and the first 18 hole course was inaugurated in 1975. With global vehicle manufacturer Volvo headquartered in Gothenburg, it was only natural for the up-and-coming club to host the Volvo International Tournament, the first Ladies European Tour event held outside the UK and France, starting in 1980. The club also hosted the Volvo Albatross, Tour Final of the Swedish Golf Tour 1986–1989, with winners such as Magnus Persson (golfer), Magnus Persson, Anders Sørensen and Magnus Sunesson. Amongst the successful players to represent the club are Ladies European Tour players Helene Koch and Kärstin Ehrnlund and Mats Lanner, PGA European Tour, European Tour winner and member of the winning Swedish team at the 1991 Dunhill Cup. Gothenburg
Gothenburg (; abbreviated Gbg; sv, Göteborg ) is the second-largest city in Sweden, fifth-largest in the Nordic countries, and capital of the Västra Götaland County. Kärstin Ehrnlund
Kärstin Helena Ehrnlund Strand (born 10 February 1959 in Karlstad) is a Swedish professional golfer. She was the first Swedish woman to join a professional golf tour and the first Swede to record a victory on an international tour. Early years Ehrnlund's father Sven-Erik was a well-known coach for the local bandy team, Surte Bandy Club, in the 1970s, playing at the highest level in Sweden. Living in the small society Bohus, Sweden, the family started playing golf at nearby Lysegården Golf Club, but soon switched to Gullbringa Golf & Country Club in Kungälv, the same club as were, future LPGA Tour winners, Helen Alfredsson and Carin Koch started their careers a few years later. Ehrnlund found more interest in horse riding at young ages, but allergy against horses forced her to golf instead. It was later found that her allergy was against hay. Beverly Lewis (golfer)
Beverly Marie Lewis (née Jones) is an American Christian fiction novelist and adult and children's author of over 100 books. Lewis is a former schoolteacher and musician. She started playing the piano at age four, and began writing short stories and poetry when she was nine years old. Much of her writing focuses on the Old Order Amish. Her maternal grandmother, Ada Ranck Buchwalter, was born into an Old Order Mennonite Church, which interested Lewis in her own "plain heritage." Her father was a pastor in Lancaster, Pennsylvania (the heart of the Pennsylvania Dutch community), where she was born and grew up. She was raised and continues to be part of the Assemblies of God community. She went to Evangel University, and received the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2003. She is also a member of the National League of American Pen Women. Lewis is married to David Lewis, and they have three grown children and three grandchildren. They live in Colorado. 1981 Ladies European Tour
The 1981 Ladies European Tour was the third season of golf tournaments organised by the Women's Professional Golfers' Association (WPGA), which later became the Ladies European Tour (LET). There were 13 tournaments on the schedule including four Carlsberg sponsored events and the Women's British Open, organised by the Ladies' Golf Union. For the 1982 season, the majority of tournaments were increased to 54-holes, having previously been held over 36-holes. This included the Carlsberg events, which were reduced in number, from ten down to four, in order to increase the prize funds at each event. Total prize money on the tour was planned to rise to £250,000 in 1981, but the tour suffered financially during the season as several tournaments were cancelled after sponsors withdrew their support. Jenny Lee Smith
Jennifer Constance Lee Smith (born 2 December 1948) is an English golfer, known for winning the inaugural Women's British Open in 1976 at Fulford Golf Club, York, England and later winning the Order of Merit on the Women's Professional Golf Association tour (now Ladies European Tour) in 1981 and 1982. Lee-Smith was born and raised in Newcastle upon Tyne and started playing golf at a relatively young age. After some success in regional tournaments in the late 1960s and early 1970s, she began to play in international tournaments. She was a member of the Great Britain Curtis Cup team in both 1974 and 1976, represented England in the 1975 European Team Championships, and played for Great Britain & Ireland in the 1976 Espirito Santo Trophy. The 1980 Ladies European Tour was the second season of golf tournaments organised by the Women's Professional Golfers' Association (WPGA), which later became the Ladies European Tour (LET). The tour was principally sponsored by Carlsberg, who organised ten 36-hole tournaments counting towards their own Order of Merit. There were eleven other tournaments on the schedule including the Women's British Open, organised by the Ladies' Golf Union. 1991 Dunhill Cup
The 1991 Dunhill Cup was the seventh Dunhill Cup. It was a team tournament featuring 16 countries, each represented by three players. The Cup was played 10–13 October at the Old Course at St Andrews in Scotland. The sponsor was the Alfred Dunhill company. The Swedish team of Anders Forsbrand, Per-Ulrik Johansson, and Mats Lanner beat the South African team of John Bland, David Frost, and Gary Player in the final. The final match was scheduled to consist of six individual matches (as in 1989 and 1990) but was reduced to three matches (as from 1985 to 1988) due to weather. The European Tour (currently known as the DP World Tour for sponsorship reasons), legally the PGA European Tour is the leading men's professional golf tour in Europe. The organisation also operates the European Senior Tour (for players aged fifty or older) and the developmental Challenge Tour; the second tier of men’s professional golf in Europe. Mats Lanner
Mats Åke Lanner (born 5 March 1961) is a Swedish professional golfer, who formerly played on the European Tour. In 1987, he became the second Swedish player to win a European Tour tournament. Early life and amateur career Lanner was born in Gothenburg, Sweden, and learned the game at Albatross Golf Club, situated on the island Hisingen in the northern part of the city of Gothenburg. He was also a member at Strömstad Golf Club, near the Norwegian border, were he won the club championship at 16 years of age. After twice winning the yearly 72-hole tournament Gothenburg Open at his home club, but never been nominated to any national amateur teams, he turned professional after the 1981 season, sponsored by a member of his club.
