Albanian Patrol Vessel Iliria (P 131)
''Iliria'' is an ''Iliria''-class patrol vessel of the Albanian Coast Guard, built in Gorinchem, Netherlands by Damen Group. The class takes the name of the ship itself as it is its first. While the name itself is based on Illyria, an ancient region where today's Albania is part. The ship was commissioned and entered in service in 2008. First of class In 2007, Damen Shipyard in Gorinchem, Netherlands was awarded a 31 million euros contract to build four patrol vessels. Most of the funding would be provided by the Albanian government through the Ministry of Defense and 35% of it would be supported through a grant from the Dutch Government. ''Iliria''-class patrol vessels is an Albanian Coast Guard class of patrol vessels, that is based on the Damen Stan 4207 patrol vessel design. The first ship of this class ''Iliria'' (P 131), from which the class takes its name, was produced in Gorinchem, Netherlands by Damen Group and was commissioned in 2008. The other three vessels were built locally starting from 2009 to 2014 in Albania by the state-owned Pashaliman Shipyard. The Pasha Liman Base, or Pashaliman Base, is an Albanian Navy base south of Vlorë, Albania. History Cold War history Pashaliman was the only Soviet base in the Mediterranean in the 1950s. It was the hot spot of conflict between the Soviets and the Albanians in 1961 when Albania pulled out of the Warsaw Pact and the dispute of the four Whiskey-class submarine ownership which Albania had seized. Following the collapse of the Communist regime, the base was rebuilt by Turkey and under a bilateral agreement the Turkish Navy has the right to use it. The Albanian Coast Guard ( sq, Roja Bregdetare) is the maritime law enforcement force of Albania. It is a paramilitary force which is under the authority of the Ministry of Defence and its operational duties in peacetime are organized and commanded by the Inter-Institutional Operational Maritime Center (QNOD).
