Allan McLean (philanthropist)
Allan McLean (24 May 1822 – 12 November 1907) was a New Zealand runholder and philanthropist. Moving from Scotland to Australia as a child, and to New Zealand as an adult, he rose from a working class shepherd, to sheep rancher and a rich land holder. In his seventies, McLean built 'Holly Lea' in Christchurch, which was renamed McLean's Mansion. After his death, the building served as the McLean Institute through an act of parliament. Early life He was born on Coll, one of the islands of the Inner Hebrides of Scotland, and baptised on 24 May 1822. His father, Alexander McLean, was a farmer and fisherman who lived on Lagmor, where he drowned in 1836. Initially, the family was sustained by the large tracts of land they owned on the Isles of Tiree and Mull as well as on the mainland at Mowern and Ardnamurchan. Allan Maclean of Torloisk (1725–1798) was a Jacobite who became a British Army general. He was born on the Isle of Mull, Scotland. He is best known for leading the 84th Regiment of Foot (Royal Highland Emigrants) in the Battle of Quebec. Early life Allan was the third son of Donald Maclean, 5th Laird of Torloisk and Mary (Campbell) Maclean, daughter of Archibald Campbell of Sunderland. Sir Allan Maclean, 6th Baronet of Morvern (1710 – 10 December 1783) was the 22nd Clan Chief of Clan Maclean from 1750 till his death in 1783. He was the 4th Laird of Brolas. Allan Maclean, 10th of Ardgour (1668-1756) was a Scottish laird, chieftain of the junior ''Ardgour'' branch of Clan Maclean. Biography He was born in 1668 to Ewen Maclean, 9th Laird of Ardgour and Mary, daughter of Lachlan Maclean of Lochbuie. His siblings were Donald, Charles, John, and Lachlan. He had the misfortune of being the representative of the family in evil times, on which account he and his tribe in a more especial manner were persecuted for depredations committed not only by them, but for the deeds of other clans also. In 1685 an indemnity for their past offenses was procured by Torloisk at London, but as Torloisk died soon after his return, no one knew it was in his custody until afterward accidentally discovered. Sir Allan Maclean, 3rd Baronet of Morvern (1645–1674) was the 19th Clan Chief of Clan Maclean from 1651 to 1674. He married then had as his son: Sir John Maclean, 4th Baronet. Biography He was born in 1645 and became chief at age six by the death of his brother Sir Hector Maclean, 2nd Baronet in 1651. Before reaching legal adulthood, the estates were managed by his legal guardians, both uncles: Donald Maclean, 1st Laird of Brolas and Hector MacLean of Lochbuy. The guardians paid off a portion of Duke of Argyle's claims; but the latter, learning that the late chief had contracted some debts in fitting out his clan for service during the late campaign, prevailed upon the creditors to dispose of their claims. Allan Robert Charles McLean (1 February 1914 – 9 November 1989) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Port Adelaide and Norwood in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) and St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Affectionately referred to as "Big Bob" McLean, he later became a long-serving football administrator in South Australia. He was also a good cricketer, representing South Australia in the Sheffield Shield and topped the Australian bowling and batting averages in 1947. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 1983 New Year Honours for service to sport. Alan McLean (26 September 1911 – 12 August 2003) was a New Zealand cricketer who played first-class cricket for Wellington in the 1947-48 season. A solid middle-order batsman and an accurate medium-pace bowler who was able to move the ball sharply off the wicket, McLean played for the Institute club in Wellington. He topped the Wellington Cricket Association averages in the 1936-37 season with 43 wickets at 11.23. In a match for a Wellington second team against Hawke's Bay in 1937-38 he took 5 for 9 off 10 overs in Hawke’s Bay’s first innings, then made the top score of the match with 51. The Second World War intervened before McLean could play first-class cricket. A carpenter by trade, he served as a sapper with New Zealand forces in North Africa.
