State Route 189 (SR 189) is a state highway in Coffee and Crenshaw counties, in Alabama, United States, that serves as a connection between Kinston, Elba and Brantley. SR 189 intersects SR 52 at its southern terminus and US 331 at its northern terminus. Route description SR 189 begins at its intersection with SR 52 in the central business district of Kinston. From this terminus, the route travels in an easterly direction prior to turning to the north as it exits the town. From this point, SR 189 generally travels in a north-northeast direction where it intersects both SR 134 and SR 141 en route to Elba. Within Elba, the route turns north in a concurrency with SR 203 and joins US 84 on the west side of the town. Upon leaving their brief concurrency with US 84, SR 189 and 203 turn north and east in a bypass of Elba. Coffee County is a county located in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Alabama. As of the 2020 census, the population was 53,465. Its name is in honor of General John Coffee. Coffee County comprises the Enterprise, Micropolitan Statistical Area, which was originally Enterprise–Ozark micropolitan area in 2010 censuses before being split off. It was originally included in the Dothan-Enterprise-Ozark, Combined Statistical Area in its 2012 statistics but the area in its recent years has been separated from the Dothan metropolitan area and Ozark micropolitan area in later censuses and is its own primary statistical area now. Crenshaw County, Alabama
Crenshaw County is a county located in the south central portion of the U.S. state of Alabama. It is located immediately south of the Montgomery metropolitan area. As of the 2020 census, the population was 13,194. Its county seat is Luverne. Its name is in honor of an Alabama judge, Anderson Crenshaw. History Crenshaw County was established after the American Civil War on November 30, 1866, by the Reconstruction era legislature. It was formed from parts of Butler, Coffee, Covington, Pike and Lowndes counties. While part of the coastal area, this county had relatively infertile soils, limiting cotton and other agriculture. Kinston is a town in Coffee County, Alabama, United States. At the 2020 census, the population was 580. It is part of the Enterprise Micropolitan Statistical Area. History On March 10, 2009, in the Alabama towns of Kinston, Samson and Geneva, Michael McLendon went on a shooting rampage, killing ten people and wounding six more before committing suicide. Elba, Alabama
Elba is a city in and the county seat of Coffee County, Alabama, United States. It is the official seat, although there are two county courthouses, with the other one being located in the town of Enterprise. At the time of the 2010 U.S. census, Elba's population was 3,940. Elba is part of the Enterprise micropolitan statistical area. History The town which eventually became Elba originated near a ferry across the Pea River in the early 1830s. Originally called Bridgeville, a U.S. post office was established in the town by 1841. In 1851, a lottery to determine a new name for the town was held. State Route 134 (SR 134) is an east-west state route located in Covington, Coffee, Dale, Henry, and Houston counties in Alabama. It loosely parallels U.S. Route 84 (US 84) between Opp and the Chattahoochee River. Route description The route begins at US 331/US 84 along the Opp Bypass. It heads east into southern Coffee County, intersecting SR 189 and SR 87 en route to Enterprise. State Route 141 (SR 141) is a state highway in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Alabama. The highway travels from SR 189 southeast of Elba north to U.S. Route 331 (US 331) and SR 9 south of Brantley. Route description SR 141 begins at an intersection with SR 189 in rural Coffee County, southeast of Elba. From here, the highway heads north-northwest through farmland until it intersects US 84 ( internally designated as SR 12); the two highways share a brief concurrency.
