Al Epperly
Albert "Tub" Paul Epperly (May 7, 1918 – April 14, 2003) was a pitcher in Major League Baseball. He played in nine games for the Chicago Cubs in 1938. While he was with the Cubs, Epperly wore uniform number 56, had eight at-bats, two hits, one double, and two runs. He pitched five games for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1950 wearing number 11 on his jersey. He worked for the sheriff's office in Scott County, Iowa from 1954 to 1984. In baseball, the pitcher is the player who throws ("pitches") the baseball from the pitcher's mound toward the catcher to begin each play, with the goal of retiring a batter, who attempts to either make contact with the pitched ball or draw a walk. In the numbering system used to record defensive plays, the pitcher is assigned the number 1. The pitcher is often considered the most important player on the defensive side of the game, and as such is situated at the right end of the defensive spectrum.
