''Al Iqtissadiya'' (Arabic: الاقتصادية; ''Economy'') is a weekly Arabic newspaper published in Syria. The paper is one of the first privately owned publications in Syria. Its sister paper is '' Al Watan'', a daily newspaper. History and profile ''Al Iqtissadiya'' was launched in June 2001. The owner of the weekly is Rami Makhlouf, the cousin of the Syrian President Bashar Assad. The paper, based in Damascus, is published on Sundays. It focuses on financial and business news, including local news, international news, economical research and studies. As of 2012 the paper both exhibited a critical attitude towards slow progress in the economic and social fields and clearly supported the Assad regime's national and foreign policies. In 2005, the editor-in-chief of the paper was Waddah Abed Rabbo. ''Al-Watan'' ( ar, الوطن, lit=The Homeland) is a privately owned government-aligned Syrian Arabic language daily newspaper published in Syria. History and profile ''Al Watan'' was launched in 2006. The paper is published by the Syrian Arab Publishing and Distributing Company. It is the country's first private daily newspaper since the 1960s (not counting the state party organ '' Al-Baath''), but its editorial line and reporting is practically identical to that of the public-owned papers. In fact, the owner of the daily is the cousin of the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Rami Makhlouf. Its sister daily is '' Al Iqtissadiya''. Rami Makhlouf
Rami Makhlouf ( ar, رَامِي مَخْلُوف, Rāmī Maḫlūf; born 10 July 1969) is a Syrian businessman and the maternal cousin of president Bashar al-Assad. At the beginning of the Syrian civil war, Syrian Civil War in 2011, he was considered to be Syria's richest man and one of the most powerful. According to Syrian analysts, he is part of al-Assad's inner circle and no foreign company could do business in Syria at the time without his consent and partnership. In 2016, he was reported to own Syriatel, the largest mobile phone network in Syria, along with other retail, banking and real estate companies. Assassination Of Rafic Hariri
On 14 February 2005, former Prime Minister of Lebanon Rafic Hariri was killed along with 21 others in an explosion in Beirut, Lebanon. Explosives equivalent to around 1,000 kilograms (2,200 pounds) of TNT were detonated as his motorcade drove near the St. George Hotel. Among the dead were several of Hariri's bodyguards and former Minister of the Economy, Bassel Fleihan. Hariri had been part of the anti-Syrian opposition in Lebanon.
