Acra (fortress)
The Acra (also spelled Akra, from grc, Ἄκρα, he, חקרא ,חקרה ''Ḥaqra(h)''), with the meaning of "stronghold" (see under "Etymology"), was a place in Jerusalem thought to have had a fortified compound built by Antiochus Epiphanes, ruler of the Seleucid Empire, following his sack of the city in 168 BCE. The name Acra was also used at a later time for a city quarter probably associated with the by-then destroyed fortress, known in his time to Josephus (1st century CE) as both Acra and "the lower city". The fortress played a significant role in the events surrounding the Maccabean Revolt, which resulted in the formation of the Hasmonean Kingdom. The "upper city" was captured by Judas Maccabeus, with the Seleucid garrison taking refuge in the "Acra" below, and the task of destroying this last enemy stronghold inside Jerusalem fell to Simon Maccabeus surnamed Thassi. Our knowledge about the Acra is based almost exclusively on the writings of Josephus, which are of ...

Akra Leuke
Lucentum ( grc-gre, Λούκεντον, ''Loúkenton''), called Lucentia by Pomponius Mela, is the Roman predecessor of the city of Alicante, Spain. Particularly, it refers to the archaeological site in which the remains of this ancient settlement lie, at a place known as ''El Tossal de Manises'', in the neighborhood of Albufereta. Ancient history Diodorus ascribes Lucentum's foundation to the Carthaginian leader Hamilcar Barcas. As a Mediterranean and Iberian commercial center, it had trading contacts with Greece, Phoenicia, and the southern Iberian city of Tartessos, absorbing some of their influences. This unique mixture gave rise to a culture called Contestani by Pliny the Elder and Strabo. Its ruins include various distinctly Carthaginian features. The Punic town was known to the Greeks as the "White Promontory" or "White Citadel", variously given as ( grc-gre, Ἄκρα Λευκά), (), and ()."Roman Policy in Spain", ''Harvard Studies in Classical Philology'', 20 ...

Akra, Crimea
Akra ( grc, Ἄκρα) was an ancient Greek city at the Cimmerian Bosporus. The city is now underwater at the Kerch Strait, near the Naberezhne village in Crimea. It was flooded as a result of the transgression of the Black Sea and is now almost entirely immersed in the sea, with the exception of a small section at the Yanysh lake. It was founded in the late 6th BC by Nymphaeum or Panticapaeum and was part of the Kingdom of Bosporus until the beginning of the 4th AD. It was an important place for anchoring and trade. The layers of the Roman and the Late Hellenistic periods are destroyed by the waves but the early Hellenistic and Classical periods layers are intact. The city had well-developed fortifications, including walls and towers. The underwater research has revealed many archaeological findings including coins, amphoras, terracottas, buildings and personal objects.
