Air Force Falcons Basketball
The Air Force Falcons are the intercollegiate athletic teams that represent the United States Air Force Academy, located in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The athletics department has 17 men's and 10 women's NCAA-sanctioned teams. The current athletic director is Nathan Pine. The majority of Falcon teams compete as members of the Mountain West Conference. Team name origin The falcon mascot was selected by popular vote of the Academy's Class of 1959, the first class to graduate from the Academy. The team mascot is "Mach 1" name of the first falcon presented to the academy on October 5, 1955, however each performing falcon is given an individual name by its cadet falconer. The current mascot, a female white phase gyrfalcon named Nova, has been the official mascot since 2020. Mountain West Conference
The Mountain West Conference (MW) is one of the collegiate athletic conferences affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) (formerly I-A). The MW officially began operations on January 4, 1999. Geographically, the MW covers a broad expanse of the Western United States, with member schools located in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. Craig Thompson has served as Commissioner of the MW since October 15, 1998; Gloria Nevarez will take over the post on January 1, 2023 after Thompson's retirement. United States Air Force Academy
The United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) is a United States service academy in El Paso County, Colorado, immediately north of Colorado Springs. It educates cadets for service in the officer corps of the United States Air Force and United States Space Force. It is the youngest of the five service academies, having graduated its first class in 1959, but is the third in seniority. Graduates of the academy's four-year program receive a Bachelor of Science degree and are commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Air Force or U.S. Space Force. The academy is also one of the largest tourist attractions in Colorado, attracting approximately a million visitors each year. West Coast Conference
The West Coast Conference (WCC) — known as the California Basketball Association from 1952 to 1956 and then as the West Coast Athletic Conference until 1989 — is a collegiate athletic conference affiliated with NCAA Division I consisting of ten member schools across the states of California, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. All of the current members are private, faith-based institutions. Seven members are Catholic Church affiliates, with four of these schools being Jesuit institutions. The Air Force Falcons men's lacrosse team represents the United States Air Force Academy in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I college lacrosse. The program was created in 1967. Air Force plays its home games at Falcon Stadium, which has a capacity of 46,692. The Falcons played their first season in the ASUN Conference in spring 2022 after having played the previous six seasons in the Southern Conference, with previous conference membership in the Great Western Lacrosse League and the ECAC Lacrosse League. Through 2019, the team has an all–time record of 403–298. The Falcons appeared in the first NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship in 1971, losing to Maryland 10–1. The Air Force Falcons men's ice hockey team is a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I college ice hockey program that represents the United States Air Force Academy. The Falcons are a member of Atlantic Hockey. They play at the Cadet Ice Arena in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Air Force Falcons women's basketball team is the women's basketball team that represents the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The team currently competes in the Mountain West Conference. The Falcons are currently coached by Chris Gobrecht. The Falcons competed at the Division II level in both the AIAW and NCAA from 1976 to 1996 before joining Division I. They played in the NCAA Division II tournament twice, in 1985 and 1990.
