Aiono Nonumalo Sofara
Aiono Nonumalo Sofara is a chief (''matai'') and former Member of Parliament in Samoa. He was a member of the Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP) and later the Samoan National Development Party (SNDP). He became Speaker of the National Legislature when the Human Rights Protection Party first came to power. He was the Speaker from 1982 to 1987. Nonumalo then went on to join the SNDP. He was also a strong opponent of the introduction of universal suffrage, and actively sought to have the act repealed. Aiono was married to the late Eni Sofara, sister of two other Samoan parliamentarians, Laulu Fetauimalemau Mata'afa and Matatumua Maimoana Matatumua Maimoana (1935–2012), also known as Matatumua Maimoaga Vermeulen, was a '' matai'', politician, Nurse and Environmentalist of Samoa. Human Rights Protection Party
The Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP, sm, Vaega Faaupufai e Puipuia Aia Tatau a Tagata) is a Samoan political party. It was founded in 1982 and dominated Samoan party politics for decades thereafter, leading every government until their defeat in 2021. Va'ai Kolone and Tofilau Eti Alesana co-founded the party in May 1979 in opposition to the government of Tupuola Efi. It has governed the country since first winning power in 1982, except for a brief period in 1986 and 1987 when internal differences forced it into coalition. The two founders of the early party, Kolone and Alesana, both became Prime Ministers of Samoa. Former prime minister Tuila'epa Sailele Malielegaoi has led the party since 1998. Samoan National Development Party
The Samoan National Development Party (SNDP) was a political party in Samoa, and the country's main opposition party between 1988 and 2003. The party was formed from a merger of the Christian Democratic Party and Samoa National Party in April 1988. At the 1991 election the party won 17 of 47 seats, and party leader Tupua Tamasese Efi lost his seat. They won 13 seats at the 1996 election. At the 2001 election the party won 23.5% of popular votes and 13 out of 49 seats. Matatumua Maimoana (1935–2012), also known as Matatumua Maimoaga Vermeulen, was a '' matai'', politician, Nurse and Environmentalist of Samoa. Her chief title, Matatumua, was an orator's title from the village of Faleasiu. She was a former member of parliament in Samoa and the founder of the Samoa All People's Party (SAPP), becoming the first woman to lead a political party in the country. SAPP allowed people as young as 16, regardless of gender or whether they were ''matai'' to be officers in the organisation which included village branches.
