Aida Huseynova
Aida Huseynova ( – 20 June 2022) was a musicologist, pianist, and ethnomusicologist from Azerbaijan. She spent the last decade and a half of her career teaching in the Music in General Studies program at Indiana University--Bloomington and serving as an arts consultant for Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble, the Mike Morris Dance group, and other ensembles and initiatives. Huseynova died in Istanbul on 20 June 2022 aged 57. Early life and education Huseynova was raised in Baku, where she attended the Baku State Conservatory (now the Hajibeyov Baku Academy of Music) and received her bachelor's degree in 1987. One of her professors was the composer and pianist Elmira Nazirova. Huseynova identified Nazirova as an inspiration for Dmitri Shostakovich's Tenth Symphony. Huseynova earned her PhD from the St. Petersburg Conservatory in 1992, finishing her doctoral studies during the collapse of the Soviet Union. Farghana Qasimova
Fargana Alim qizi Qasimova ( az, Fərqanə Alim qızı Qasımova; born August 6, 1979) is an Azerbaijani mugham singer in Azerbaijan. She is the daughter of famous mugham singer Alim Qasimov. She has twice received presidential awards for the promotion of Azerbaijani music, in 2012 and 2014. Biography In 1995, at the age of sixteen, Qasimova joined Alim Qasimov on his concert tour to Germany for the first time. By the age of twenty she had become a full-fledged singer in her own right, and Qasimov chose to include his daughter in his ensemble. Farghana first appeared on 1997's ''The Legendary Art of Mugham,'' on which the two shared vocal tasks on the song Getme Getme. Their next album included a track, Bagishlamani, dedicated to his colleague, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. ''Leyli and Majnun'' ( az, Leyli və Məcnun) is an opera in four acts by Uzeyir Hajibeyov, to an Azerbaijani libretto written by the composer and his brother Jeyhun Hajibeyov. The opera was first performed in Baku in 1908. Performance history It was written in 1907 and first performed on at the Taghiyev Theatre in Baku, which was then part of the Russian Empire. The opera is considered the First Opera of the Muslim East. The first performance of the opera was led by Huseyn Arablinski and Hajibeyov himself played violin. Uzeyir Hajibeyov and his brother Jeyhun Hajibeyov wrote the libretto for the opera based on Azerbaijani poet Muhammad Fuzuli's poem Layla and Majnun; most parts of the poem remained unchanged. Mugham
Mugham ( az, Muğam) or Mughamat ( az, Muğamat) is one of the many classical compositions from Azerbaijan, contrasting with tasnif and ashik. It is a highly complex art form that weds classical poetry and musical improvisation in specific local modes. Mugham is a modal system. Unlike Western modes, "mugham" modes are associated not only with scales but with an orally transmitted collection of melodies and melodic fragments that performers use in the course of improvisation. Mugham is a compound composition of many parts. The choice of a particular mugham and a style of performance fits a specific event. Silkroad, formerly the Silk Road Project, Inc., is a not-for-profit organization, initiated by the cellist Yo-Yo Ma in 1998, promoting collaboration among artists and institutions, promoting multicultural artistic exchange, and studying the ebb and flow of ideas.
