Aibonito () is a small mountain town and municipality in Puerto Rico located in the Sierra de Cayey mountain range, north of Salinas; south of Barranquitas and Comerío; east of Coamo; and west of Cidra, and Cayey. Aibonito is spread over 8 ''barrios'' and Aibonito Pueblo (the downtown area and the administrative center of the city). It is part of the San Juan-Caguas-Guaynabo Metropolitan Statistical Area. Aibonito is located at a relatively high elevation (its main square is the highest in the island at 2,401 ft 31 mabove sea level), which makes its climate cooler than most of Puerto Rico's towns. Etymology and nicknames There are several theories and stories regarding the name of the town. Some people say that it is derived from the Taíno word ''Jatibonicu'', which was the name of a legendary cacique (chief) of the area, but most likely was the name of the tribe lead by chief Orocobix. Aibonito Barrio-pueblo
Aibonito barrio-pueblo is a barrio and the administrative center (seat) of Aibonito, a municipality of Puerto Rico. Its population in 2010 was 3,539. As was customary in Spain, in Puerto Rico, the municipality has a barrio called ''pueblo'' which contains a central plaza, the municipal buildings (city hall), and a Catholic church. Fiestas patronales (patron saint festivals) are held in the central plaza every year. Telephone numbers in Puerto Rico are assigned under the North American Numbering Plan (NANP). Prior to March 1, 1996, Puerto Rico was one of many Caribbean islands served by area code 809. On that date Puerto Rico was assigned the new area code 787 (with the mnemonic PUR or PTR). Permissive dialing of 809 ended January 31, 1997. Within only four years, 787 was already on the brink of exhaustion due to the proliferation of cell phones and dial-up Internet connections. To solve the problem, 787 was overlaid with area code 939 in or about September 2001, with ten-digit dialing required for all calls. A split had been ruled out in order to spare Puerto Ricans the expense and burden of changing their numbers for the second time in a decade, the island's extremely dense population, and the lack of a suitable boundary for a split. 939 is primarily used for cell phones. Cayey (), officially Cayey de Muesas, is a mountain town and municipality in central Puerto Rico located on the Sierra de Cayey within the Central Mountain range, north of Salinas and Guayama; south of Cidra and Caguas; east of Aibonito and Salinas; and west of San Lorenzo. Cayey is spread over 21 barrios plus Cayey Pueblo (the downtown area and the administrative center). It is part of the San Juan-Caguas-Guaynabo Metropolitan Statistical Area. Cayey is notable for its surrounding mountains. The city has been actively growing since the 1990s, evidenced by its designation as a Metropolitan Area by the U.S. Census Bureau. Cidra () is a town and municipality of Puerto Rico located in the central region of the island, north of Cayey; south of Comerío and Aguas Buenas; east of Aibonito and Barranquitas; and west of Caguas. Sierra De Cayey
Sierra de Cayey is a mountain range in the main island of Puerto Rico. It is located in the southeast section of the island. Its elevations do not exceed 1000 m (3,280 ft.). The Grande de Loíza, which is one of the most important rivers in Puerto Rico, has its sources in this range within the municipality of San Lorenzo. The La Plata River flows through the Cayey Valley where the town of Cayey is located on the northern slope of the range. There are tobacco and coffee crops in the area.
