Ahmed Mooge Liibaan
Ahmed Mooge Liibaan ( so, Axmed Mooge Liibaan, ar, احمد الموجي ليبان) (1943-1997) was a prominent Somali musician and singer. He was the brother of Mohamed Mooge Liibaan, another prominent Somali artist, and is also the father of the current Mayor of Somaliland's capital Hargeisa, Abdikarim Ahmed Mooge. Overview Traditional Somali music Somali people have a rich musical heritage centered on traditional Somali folklore. Somali songs are pentatonic. That is, they only use five pitches per octave in contrast to a heptatonic (seven note) scale such as the major scale. Mohamed Sulayman Tubeec ( so, Maxamed Saleebaan Tubeec), (1941– 11 March 2014) was a Somali singer, songwriter and record producer, called the King of Voice. Personal life Tubeec was born in 1941 in the town of Laaleys near Berbera, situated in British Somaliland (now Somaliland). During his teenage years he lived in Berbera, Hargeisa and Burao where he grew up. His father, Sulayman Tubeec, was a blacksmith. Tubeec hailed from the Gaboye Somali clan. His mother, Shaqlan Omar Salim, descended from a Hadhrami family from Hami, Yemen. He was the second oldest of four children, three boys and one girl. In 1959 Tubeec moved to Djibouti with his older brother Jama Tubeec, who was a singer as well, where he also started his career as a singer. Maryam Mursal
Maryam Mursal ( so, Maryan Mursal, ar, مريم مرسل) (born 1 January 1950) is a Somali composer and vocalist. Biography Mursal grew up in Somalia in a Muslim family with four daughters. Mursal's family was originally from Somaliland, and is from the Madhibaan clan. As a teenager, she broke with tradition and began singing professionally in Mogadishu. She performed in nightclubs and her brand of music, featuring a mix of blues, soul, Somali and Arabic influences, and known as ''Somali jazz'', became popular across the country. Performing primarily solo, she also collaborated with Waaberi, a 300-member music and dance troupe associated with the Somali National Theatre. Later, after having criticized Somalia's then ruling military government, she was banned from singing for two years, and made her living driving a taxi. Ali Abdi Feiruz, known as Ali Feiruz, ( so, Cali Fayruus) was a prominent Somali musician. He belonged to the Habr Awal clan of the Isaaq clan family. Biography Feiruz was born in 1931 in Djibouti. He later moved to Hargeisa, Somaliland in the late 1950s, and then on to Mogadishu in 1973. Feiruz's career began with Radio Hargeisa in the late 1950s. He was one of the first popular Somali ''kaban'' (oud) players in the 1950s, and eventually began incorporating modern instruments into his performances in the 1960s, such as the guitar, violin and accordion. A prominent member of the Walaalaha Hargeisa and Hobolada Waaberi musical troupes, Feiruz composed, among other tunes, ''Ilaahayow waa kugu mahad'', a tune whose release coincided with the independence of the former British Somaliland protectorate. Abdullahi Qarshe ( so, Cabdilaahi Qarshe, ar, عبدالله قارشي) (1924–1994) was a Somali people, Somali musician, poet and playwright known as the "Father of Music of Somalia, Somali music". In 1957 he wrote and composed the Somali National Anthem, Qolobaa Calankeed. Biography Early life Qarshe was born in 1924 in the Somali expatriate community in Moshi, Kilimanjaro, Moshi, Tanzania. He belonged to the Mousa Arreh subdivision of the Habar Yoonis sub clan of Garhajis Isaaq that mainly inhabits the Togdheer region of Somaliland. Before migrating to Tanzania, his family was based in the town of Maydh, in the Sanaag region in eastern Somaliland, where they were the keepers of the tomb of Ishaaq bin Ahmed, Shaykh Ishaaq, the common progenitor of the wider Isaaq clan family. Abdikarim Ahmed Mooge Liibaan ( so, Cabdikariin Axmed Mooge Liibaan) is a Somaliland politician and is the current Mayor of Hargeisa, the largest city and capital of Somaliland. He belongs to the Eidagale sub-division of the Garhajis Isaaq clan. Early life Abdikarim was born in 1974 in Sin-ujiif, a village in the outskirts of Garowe, Somalia. Abdikarim is the son of famous Somali artist Ahmed Mooge Liibaan and nephew of famous Somali artist Mohamed Mooge Liibaan. He grew up in Hargeisa, where he completed his primary and secondary education. At the outbreak of clashes in Hargeisa during the Somaliland War of Independence, Abdikarim fled to Ethiopia, specifically the Kaam-Abokor refugee camp. Hargeisa (; so, Hargeysa, ar, هرجيسا) is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Somaliland. It is located in the Maroodi Jeex region of the Horn of Africa. It succeeded Burco as the capital of the British Somaliland Protectorate in 1941. Hargeisa is the largest city in Somaliland, and also served as the capital of the Isaaq Sultanate during the mid-to-late 19th century.
